Why is there a modeling light on strobes ?

  1. I am always a little puzzle with why is there a modeling light on strobe.

I was learn to shoot with the strobe not aiming at the subject to reduce backscatter even in macro, point it parallel straight out on the side of the port. So the modeling light never cast enough light to do anything. Why is it there if it doesn't really help ? When it does light up the subject to help focus is when I aim the strobe at the subject but that also lit up all the unwanted floating substances. Do you use them ?

    Cheers !

  2. Agree that they are not the most necessary of things. But the modeling light can tell you where your strobe is pointed. That is also why some Inon strobes also have lasers on them - which are even less use for illuminating the subject!

Yet it is still too much to ask to have frickin' sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their frickin' heads.

  4. When I shoot macro and supermacro I like to point both or at least one of the strobes to the subject and then it really helps to have an in-strobe light. I also night dive with the strobe lights as my main source of light.

Good point about the night dive. I have DS-125s and have a Hartenberger spotting light/night light. When my wife's dive light went out I took the Hartenberger off and used one of the Ikelites for a dive light. Worked well.

  6. They are also very good for modeling. This is me - using the light in my subtronic to model for a photo for my girlfriend.

The big copyright notice is because I am posting this without asking her.

Very nice shot. We won't tell her you used the photo :D But really it is a nice shot, you do well on both sides of the camera Dr.

  8. What I like is the ability of the Inons to red up that focus light. So many creatures get so freaked out by the big dedicated focus lights. A low intensity red light helps let the critters go back to normal behavior. I found this to be esp true for light sensitive night creatures like E. Aphroditois. Plus it's a nice backup for the main focus/dive light.

  9. For the most part, it sounds like the modeling light isn't for helping cameara to focus. I found another use of the modeling light on the DS-125 very well too which is that manta-ray night dive in Kona Hawaii. When I had 2 modeling lights on plus the focus light, all the mantas come to pa-pa ... :D
