Maybe a stupid question, but;
If i set my DX-G1 to MANUAL & flash (compact camera) will it pre flash at all?
The thing is i want to trigger a basic slave flash with it, so a pre-flash that would trigger the slave too early.
Cheers

hey oskar
Most compact cameras use a pre-flash. so my guess is yes, although I can't say for sure. On the other hand, I've read that the Ricoh pre-flash doesn't change intensity, so perhaps it doesn't need a pre-flash.
many slave flashes can be set to ignore 1 or more pre-flashes, including almost all of the ones designed for UW use, so I'd check to see if your slave flash has that capability. which slave flash will you use?
Anyways, you can try a quick test indoors and see if it works.
don't forget to put some masking tape over the housing UW where the internal flash would normally fire, to reduce the backscatter from the internal flash. but make sure some of the flash light can escape from the sides, to trigger your slave flash.
hope this helps,
Scott
My old Olympus Compact wouldn't preflash on manual. You'd have to choose the output of the internal strobe in a menu. But as Scott said, you can test it by firing it topside.

My Canon G9 does not pre-flash in manual - no need ... the flash power is set to a specific power and the exposure is manually set ...
I would imagine it does not pre-flash in manual unless the camera can do TTL-flash control in manual mode (the G9 cannot).
Take a picture in the mirror with the setup and see if the slave is sync'd.
Hi
My Canon A570 would fire pre-flash in the following :
Auto and scene mode and program auto.
In manual it would not fire pre-flash
In Tv and Av if it was set to auto flash in menu it would, but if set to manual flash in menu it wouldn't.....
Hope that makes sense.....
Duncan
All,
Thanks, I'll have to try it out. As you say, it doesn't make sense with pre-flash in manual.
I do have a YS110 which can either cancel a pre-flash or mimic it to achieve "TTL" so to say.
However, I want to get a couple of additional old slave flashes to make some creative lightning effect, and they will not have the option to skip pre-flashes. Therefore the question...
