Does anybody actually know anything reliable about the rumored D400? I have seen various threads on this camera reportedly coming out this Spring - prices from $2K to $5 K - 14 - 16 mp up to 24.4 mp. The most consistent thread is this is basically a D300 with an upgraded sensor and the same body. What is the latest and greatest? (I need to spend more money soon - I can just tell.)

That's (D400) what they/some were "calling" the D700 before it came out this summer ... and it is a D300 with the D3 sensor ...
Now there is rumor/talk/anticipation of a "D700x" which will bring the sensor from the D3x to the D700/D300 body size.
No way it will cost only $2K ... the D700 costs $3K.
The D700 is FX format. I would expect Nikon to come out with a new offering in their prosumer level body - D400? - that would carry forward the DX format. Maybe adding video.

I own one ... love it.

That might makes sense ... a D300 with video and a higher-resolution sensor than the D90.
Although to really take on the 5dmkii they would need to make it a full-frame and give it 1080p video and build upon the D700.
Oh the endless wishing, speculating and dreaming is fun ...
A D400 would be DX format. Thom Hogan has said that recent developments in back-illuminated sensors should allow DX to push up to 16MP without loss in noise performance or dynamic range. People are speculating that the D400 may have a sensor with that design and bump in resolution. Otherwise, I haven't read much speculation on other improvements though video seems likely. How great would it be if they reused the D300 body?
I've also read speculation that Nikon will introduce 2 other cameras before a D700x. There are expected updates of lower end models but perhaps one will be the D300 replacement. Since they think the D700x will come around middle of the year or a bit later, expect a D400 in the first half according to the experienced rumormongers.

Thank the lord; I have time to save.

Essentially once they put an FX sensor in a D300 body it effectively becomes the D700 body as the pentaprism housing gets bigger. I doubt it's possible to put an FX in a D300 body without this change.
I just saw this on Nikon rumours, I don't read Russian, but it I understand enough to see 14.3MP, ISO 100-6400, 1080p, and $2000 ( or maybe it's rubles?)
If there is truth to the rumored D400 - same body as D300, 14.3MP, 1080 Video, ISO100-6400, I'm pretty happy with my D300's, but the 1080p video capture could be interesting. Still waiting to see how the 5D mk II pans out underwater before I would even consider it seriously.
Doesn't this constant jump in technology give you a headache?
no headache, just a big hole in the ocean in which to pour money into
I am also curious about what Fuji are up to, and what (if any) camera body Nikon will give them for their next DSLR.
