Nikon D3x #1 in DXO sensor tests.

  1. FWIW the Nikon D3x now tops the DXO sensor ranks by a significant margin (more than 5 points). I think Nikon can definitely claim to have raised the bar. Even surpasses Fuji now in DR and a full 1.7 stops beyond Canon's best.

  2. I am surprised that the 5D Mk2 is behind the 1Ds Mk3. I thought it was the same basic sensor, but improved. Kinda erodes my confidence in their testing.

But it is nice to see the D3X evaluated with a rant about its price.

  3. Those DR numbers are startling - 1.5 stops better than the D700. Looks like I'm gonna have to bite when the D700x come out ... I hope it has video.

  4. I don't think the 5D2's sensor is really improved over the 1Ds3. It's CFA is weaker which allows better low light performance but it comes at a cost of color performance (according to raw converter experts). RAW analysis shows the 5D2's noise performance isn't much different than the 1Ds3. The same experts say also that D3x CFA is the best yet among 35mm DSLRs at color accuracy. YMMV.

The midrange noise tests show that the D3x and 1Ds3 aren't nearly as different as the dynamic range numbers suggest. They also claim that the D3x outperforms the A900 handily. Perhaps the huge lead in SNR is an artifact of DxO's testing or maybe Nikon's 14 bit mode, which slows the camera way down to 7/4 fps, is doing some magic. 7/4 fps and 70 ISO sounds good to me though.

More base ISO dynamic range, more useful ISO range, more resolving power, most accurate color yet---does anyone still question whether the D3x is a meaningful improvement over the D3 for underwater shooting?

  5. Awesome!!!!!

At $8000 still not ready to buy one along with a backup. That would be like 16000000000000000000000000000 rupiah.

The interesting thing is that the IMATEST shows noise characteristics of the 5D2 to be pretty close to the D700. Whereas DXO marks it down significantly. Goes to show these tests should be treated as informative entertainment.

7/4 fps... is that like 1.75 fps? :P I finally bothered to read in detail and find it interesting that DXO didn't test the 1Ds3 at 50ISO. They list 100-3200 when L1 is listed as 50ISO for Canon. This is the same for all the Canon models which actually have a 50ISO setting. Seems to be more errors on the specs of Canon cameras than other brands. Even the D3x has an MSRP of $9172? I wonder if they are adding state tax or something? They have funky numbers for a lot of cameras.

I use IMATEST for the video analysis and it's always been consistent and the industry standard for testing cameras. I guess DXO want to make it a real market. However, the sloppy website and inaccurate specs makes me wonder about its reliability.

  8. Yeah, I use "7/4" because the "/4" part comes from the 4x sampling to get the increase in resolution for 14 bit. Everyone else says it's 1.8 and I don't like the slight error. :P That's a whole frame every 20 seconds!

The Imatest 5D2 results were JPG-based with noise reduction set to default. I don't know about the D700 test but you can see the 5D2 is higher when in-camera noise reduction is turned off.

I agree that Imatest is reliable but it is not a RAW-direct analysis. It can read RAW files through embedded dcraw but that's not the same. DxO is trying to say that they are better because of RAW but the worst thing in the world is to have anomalies in results when you are trying to look like kings of objective testing. DxO needs to prove the quality of their results over time.

Well they're French aren't they?

(Apologies any French folks, I couldn't resist.)

    Each. I need two.

  11. Well Loftus, don't you worry if you are still going to Alex's workshop next week, you will get at least one french in your group, :P

 I know :) . I just have a mere D300 so all I can do is read posts from "guys discussing sensors" :( As Loftus said "I could not resist"

The bad part is, I'm reading and enjoying it, I don't know what that makes me besides french, :fishred:

Looking forward meeting you and Alex and anybody else reading this post going to Alex's workshop next week.

Unfortunately I won't make it to Cayman this time around; but I guess I owe you a beer, I mean a glass of wine, sometime. :)
