Is this hairy shrimp seen outside Lembeh?

  1. Lembeh guide Ronald found this tiny hairy shrimp (there were many specimens) on a sponge in Lembeh. They just looked like reddish specks of fuzz on the sponge, and were seen because they moved. Shot several specimens and saw some of them had eggs! Does anyone know this shrimp's species? Is it seen outside of Lembeh?

  2. what an odd looking shrimp. i have never seen one of these. would like to though. good find.

  3. That's Phycocaris simulans. I've seen images of it from Indonesia, Bali, Philippines, and warm-water areas of Japan. They're probably not rare, just unseen because they are so well camouflaged.

  4. Yes they can be found around the Tulamben area as well. Cool find with the eggs.

  5. Ronald. He's good. Really good.

Thank you for the ID... Given how small they are, even eagle-eyed Ronald would not have seen them if they had not been moving bits of rust colored fuzz. It was only after we got back and downloaded that we saw they were shrimp and that many had the eggs!
