ULCS arms for carry on

9 posts
  1. I upgraded to ULCS arms, 5" and 8", for a G9.

I will be flying for the first time with them and as I was arranging the packing, wondered...

Any problems carrying on these arms?

I am planning to put them in a backpack designed for camera equipment.

    thanks,

    Dave

  2. I don't think there would be a problem, but I always check mine. Since they are very strong, they are unlikely to be damaged in checked luggage. I do the same with port rings. I try to keep the carry-ons as light as possible.

No problems on recent trips to the Solomon's or to Bonaire. Both trips the carry on was opened, probably because of the strobes.

  4. After dozens of security checks over recent years, on one of the checkpoints my buddy got the third degree about his arms.

I sometimes think its pretty random, what they pick up on. Mostly it just feels like they are gonna find something just to wag their finger at you. I swear the same person got upset with me the time before (she was pretty memorable) about a charger in my kit but not about the arms.

I wouldn't let it stop me. just be prepared to unpack and show ... not had anything confiscated, even though I get stopped most security checkpoints.

btw, I carry-on enough kit to be able to shoot when I get there. Seen too many friends with luggage go AWOL ... and ruining their trip!

    :(

  5. Hi Dave

I always carry on my ulcs buoyancy arms and have never had a problem. I have had my case searched and they ask what they are but they have never given me any problems about them. I think they are looking at what your reaction is to thier questioning as much as the contents.

  6. thanks for all the great information and support.

I am going to try and pack them. I have always carried on all my camera gear...its just now I have lots more gear then ever before.

  7. I put everything in a carryon. The arms go in my Pelican 1510. I've now completely gutted the foam except for the outter rim. I use clothing to serve as protection from boucing around inside. Just don't use undies :( in case they want to unpack things and look around.

  8. I know of one girl who does use undies for exactly that reason. The flimsier and more colorful the better. Doesn't do squat for padding, but she does usually get far less grief from the TSA weenies. :(

I was thinking the same thing with a variation.

If this male were traveling and all the internal packing was with ladies undies...would I get less or more grief from security? With my luck, I would find someone in security that liked that idea and had too much interest... OOPS!

I am going for all carry on that fits puddle jumpers for camera gear. We will be returning from St Thomas via San Juan. With all the listings of missing equipment from that location, I want to carry on all I can...carrying it on my back without even a gate check. I cannot get all the dive gear on that way but I can get the camera gear in the backpack.

Now, to see if I can figure out how to get the dive gear in a gate check bag...I would likely see it all again after the trip.
