  1. Just received this in a newsletter from Undersea Explorer, the dive vessel based in Port Douglas, Queensland, famous for its dive trips in Northern Barrier Reef waters and the Coral Sea.

    SAD NEWS

I am extremely sad to inform you that I have decided to cease operations at Undersea Explorer effective immediately. It was a very difficult decision to make but due to the current global economic climate I was unable to continue.

I wish to thank all of the crew and staff who are responsible for the extraordinary reputation and experience that is Undersea Explorer. I also wish to express my appreciation to all of our guests, agents, researchers, interns, volunteers and everyone else who has been part of the Undersea Explorer team over the past few years.

We are currently in the process of transferring or refunding all forward bookings and all outstanding accounts will be paid by the end of February.

I wish you well in your future diving adventures.

    Kind regards

    LOUISE BERNSTEIN

    Managing Director

Many divers here will have fond memories of trips on Undersea over the years... the operation will be missed.

  2. we've seen the vessel on the Barrier Reef in January whilst being on another one (Spirit Of Freedom). Have to admit, it did look a bit old.

I was always curious about the far northern trips they offer, might have to find another operator for that now.

    Sad news indeed,

    Simon

  3. Undersea is a very comfortable ( and some might say ugly :D ) vessel and has a long history on the GBR. My first trip on her was to the Southern Reef around the Capricorn Group in 1991 I think, my last was a minke whale / Ribbon reef trip in 2005.

One of the things that set her apart in my view was the regular presence of real researchers, undertaking real projects that guests could get involved with, which made her more than just a dive platform.

They were probably saying the same thing on Undersea looking at Spirit :)

  5. It is sad to hear that they have ceased operations, their reputation was always very high for their trips and research conducted.
