Reasonable price for Sealux CC5 Housing for Canon 5D

  1. Hi there

I am new to the board and just wanted a bit of information. I currently have a G9 camera and housing which I love but for underwater I am now upgrading and getting housing for my Canon 5D. I have been offered the following package (second hand) and wanted to check whether the asking price is reasonable, it's been difficult to find such items for sale second hand so its difficult to ascertain whether this is a good price or not. I am looking at the CC5 Sealux housing with GD viewfinder, with the second flash connector, the internal connector cable, audio leak detector, zoom gear ring, o-ring set, Dome port, extension port, magnification lense and macro port - so basically everything I need to get started. The asking price is Euro 3000

I have also been offered the subtronic nova, with new flash arm with two joints, neoprene cover and neoprene lens cap for Euro 1300 (so total approx $5,500 for all of the above ie including the housing etc).

The gear is all about two years old so no warranty remaining but it has not been used much, is in immaculate condition and has been well looked after. Also I am in a remote place so I do need to take into account the difficulty of getting this new from elsewhere.

So anyway my question is whether you would consider this a reasonable price for such a set of equipment??

I am also purchasing the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM lens (for $900) so all I need to get new is a macro lens.

Thanks in advance for the advice!!!

  2. Hello,

To help you out - I recently purchased a used Subal 5D housing and grand iewfinder for $2,000 US. There were two available and they both sold quickly.

So hmm.. I think you may be able to do better than 3,000 Euro if you keep looking, but nothing is for certain.

    Regards,

    James

James, did you get all that with ports? I thought 3000 with the ports was not too bad.

  4. Oops, I didn't see that the dome and macro port are included. I agree - that's a pretty good deal.

    Cheers

Thanks for the feedback, feel better knowing I am not paying too much over the odds. Will go for it and then I can get started in the water!!!!

    Thanks

  6. Hi,

I can't comment too accurately on the price, but my recollection is that Sealux prices are in the same general range as Seacam, Subal, and Hugyphot. Its very good quality gear and should last a long time if taken care of properly. I have a friend, a dental surgeon from Höchstadt, who has used Sealux housings for many years and has always been very satisfed with them. Additionally, if I remember right, the Sealux housing system has a slightly larger port mount opening than either Subal or Seacam. This means that a Sealux housing will be more able to take a really large diameter lens (like Sigma's 12-24mm or Nikon's new 14-24mm) without any additional modifications which could be costly or impossible in the Maldives. I'm not suggesting that you should get either of these lenses as the Canon 16-35mm is an excellent lens for wide-angle work. A good first macro lens would be Canon's 100mm f2.8.

Thanks Fred - that is exactly the macro lens I have been looking at, good to know I am on the right track! No doubt once I get in the water with all of this I'll have many more questions!!

  8. Hi,

I'm the proud owner of a Seacam 5D housing, which I think is really the most sophisticated to fit in your hand. The house I bought for 2300€ about 8 Months ago (2nd Hand). A couple of days ago I saw one 2nd Hand in the Web for 1999€, so 3000usd I guess is much, especially as the 5D MarkII came out recently.

I have the 100mm, 50mm and the 16-35mm (1st Edition). I consider this to be an adequate range. To start I would suggest the 50mm to be the most versatile, and thus the one to start with.

The 16-35 does deserve the Superdome (or equal from other Brands) best. This because of half-half and optical quality at its corner.

The 100mm is super for small animals, but is slow at focus, thus not for use in decent currents.

Personally I guess the MarkII does not yet add enough value to switch, as I consider my experience as Photographerstill to be the bottleneck

    Hope this will help
