Tokina 10-17mm or Canon 10-22mm... or 11-16 f2.8?

  1. Searching the forums didnot give a real answer on my question:

I was browsing the local camerashop and I noticed that the Tokina 10-17mm was on sale for €425 (€549 normal), I was thinking to buy a WA or FE lens to get used to the wide angle before diving with it.. and this price makes it tempting. (10-22mm is listed at €615)

Does anyone have both lenses and can shoot an example pic with both the 10-17 and 10-22mm lenses of a room or garden for example?

I also read good reviews about the Tokina 11-16 f2.8... (€545) since 95% of my dives are in murky waters overhere, would I benefit from the faster lens, or is the zoom range and longer minimal focus distance (0.3m) just too short? (limited to scenes, no closeup wideangle)

  2. I have the 10-22 and the Tokina 10-17, and I greatly prefer the latter underwater. I also dive in pretty murky water - the close focusing of the Tokina is fantastic, and from what I've seen, it focuses well in low light (i.e., when my focus light has gone out on a deep wreck).

I'm at work right now; will post some garden shots when I get home if you're still undecided.

I'd be happy to see a 1:1 comparison  If you can, pics of both lenses at the min 10 and max. 17/22

Been scouting different review websites today but I didn't find a respectable one where both the Canon and Tokina's are reviewed.

Checking which ports are availble for my housing, dunno if the 11-16 is supported by Seatool.

  4. Hi Maarten,

go for the Tokina 10-17 FE. I got mine last week from the same local camera shop. It's great for close focus wide angle work in our waters. Here is my first test shot in the pool. Uncropped, f9,5 at 1/10", 14mm FE, ISO 200. Sea & Sea YS 350 at 1/4 and YS90 at -3. Subal 6" SW-B dome works ok by the looks of it, some vignetting at 10mm.
