Hi all. I wanted to find out if anyone has had issues with their Canon 5D mkii failing due to normal humidity changes or moisture (that wasn't a flood). I've recently read a review on luminous-landscape.com where 6 out of 26 of the 5D mkii cameras failed on a trip in Antarctica. The review stated that normal precautions were taken to avoid moisture, humidity, etc. Anyone out there have any problems so far?
I'm offshore now w/ my 5DII and it's quite humid (Gulf of Mexico).
I'll leave my camera outside overnight and report back in the morning if it works or not.
Cheers
James
So how has it worked so far James?
Still working great!
Cheers
James
I've had mine out in near 100% humidity (dense fog that was condensing on everything...just a hair shy of actual rain) for hours on a tripod trying to shoot eagles, and no problems whatsoever.
I'm wondering if the Antarctic problems might be due to outdoor temperature extremes than humidity... Cameras cease to function at different levels of extreme cold, and I haven't seen anything stating how low temps can go before the 5DII freezes up. 6 out of 26 is too high to be coincidental...
If you read that thread on LL fully you will discover that at least 2 failures were due to corrosion - which indicates salt ingress as I pointed out in the thread, not simply water. I've had to scrape snow off my 5DMkII on its first outing and it worked fine. On a similar note, I have seen a 1D stop working due to damp in South Georgia - despite being a fully sealed camera - it was revived by sitting it on top of a radiator overnight. Whatever happened on the trip discussed simply cannot be seen as representative as far too few cameras were involved - its being very overblown IMHO.
