Nikon 17-35mm w/D700 in Zen dome/Nexus housing

  1. Hi,

I am using Nikon 17-35 mm WA lens with D700 in Nexus houings(modified from d200 housing)

    with Ryan's Zen dome port.

Anthis/Nexus supply P/N:HG760 Zoom gear for 17-35mm Lens & it should be turned with left dial

on the housing (you should have 'big'gear on. I do not have P/N for it but, Anthis supply two size

gear now days & you have to remove big gear to use 105mmVR lens but, should put it back to use

17-35mm.) I was little worried as my housing was modified/moved position of camera & these gears

are so tight BUT, I was glad to find it perfectly working.

Next thing I had to find was what EXTENSION port should I use to Dome port. This information was

not available & I found myself 40mm M5 extension ring is good one. I also, tried with old 'multi'port

(40mm long too) but, I could not use it as lens was so big & port size was not big enough.

Zen dome port is 8 inch glass dome that Reef photo is selling & I heard they are getting it from Japan

& is a top quality optic. They are also, selling good quality B+W dipoters for 17-35 lens but, did not

ordered one yet & I tested lens without it here.

I noticed little of Corner/Edge softness here but, am happy with result.

  3. Looks good to me! I don't think I will pony up for 17-35; too many dollars. It’s good to know about the extension & the Zen dome. I would have thought a 50 mm extension would do.

Since you seem to know the answers, please tell me about the Nexus 105 VR zoom gear. I assume it is the usual Nexus design with and outer ring and inserts fitted to a specific lens. What is the outside and inside diameter of the outer ring? What is the inside diameter of insert or the diameter of the 105 VR zoom gear?

    Thanks in advance (TIA).

    Regards,

    Bob

  5. Hi,

Lens diameter(after remove rubber) is 80mm.

After install Inner insert, dia is 85mm.

After install outer gear is 86.7mm.

Inner dia(smallest) of macro port is 93.7mm & it gives 3.5mm room to lens on around.

Hi Sam - If you are happy with the image, that's all that matters. But, to clarify, your two posted images were at the 35mm end of the zoom range apparently, and at F-11:

You would expect the corner smearing to be more pronounced at the 17mm end. Although, having said that, your over/under is at the 17mm end and it looks good in the corners.

It will be interesting to see more real-life testing as you have time with that lens and port combo. Thanks for sharing.
