Looking at first underwater housing

4 posts
  1. Hey everyone,

My dad and I are diving in Honduras next month and are finally going to get a housing for our cameras (we both have the Canon XTi/400D). I was thinking an Ikelite housing. What strobe would you guys recommend? Anything else I need?

  2. Also I have a Sigma 10-22mm wide angle that I plan on using, and I am planning on purchasing the Canon 100mm macro soon. What ports would you recommend?

  3. Hi Mat,

Those are a couple really big questions! Now, I'm fairly new to this myself, so read my recommendations in that light.

I don't know what part of the country you're in, but the best thing would be to get into a decent shop and play with as many of the various housings as you can, see how they feel and what fits your budget. I'd also call some of the larger shops around - like our Wetpixel Sponsors listed on the right, specifically Reef Photo in Fl., Backscatter in Monterey Ca., and Marine Camera in San Diego. These guys are typically friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful on the phone. Whatever housing you get, you will need different ports for your wide angle and macro lenses (more $$). I would also throughly read the various topics here on Wetixel - there is so much info here on so many topics that alone will keep you busy for hours and hours. Once you've done that, you'll have a base of knowledge to talk to the shops and find a system that works for you.

    Good luck!

    Phil

  4. Thanks. Here in Minnesota, however, there aren't too many underwater photography shops... I'll just continue my research.
