South Australia in April

8 posts
  1. Some help with planning please...I'll be in South Australia for a couple of weeks in April and again for a week in May or June (for the cuttlefish aggregation). These will be my first opportunities to get any UW coverage in Sth Australia.

I'm keen for some dives that will give me a good look at the region's signature species and some nice UW scenics. I would also like to shoot leafy seadragons and sealions.

I'll have my 3.8m inflatable w/15hp with me, plus my 12v hookah for shallow stuff. i can join commercial trips when necessary or hook up with some local divers if anyone is interested in sharing some costs.

Would be great to get thoughts from those with experience in these waters.

Anyone know if the Rapid Bay Jetty will be open by April?

    thanks very much

  2. Hey Darren,

I don't know if you know Carey Harmer, or not, but he is the SA expert on all things 'Leafy' and also the cuttlefish.

I know that Carey has just finished guiding Howard Hall for his IMAX 'Underwater in 3D'.

You can find Carey at Sea Optics in Stepney, Adelaide. His knowledge is unsurpassed and he is a really nice bloke also.

  3. Darren

you will want at least a 7mm wetsuit as the temp will be about 15-17'C

Some good caves around Mt Gambier if you are certified.

Contact Port Macdonnel dive academy for info.

If you are doing Ceduna/Port lincoln prob a shark shield is a good idea also.

Port Mac is ok too. Ewen Ponds is a good little dive.

Give me a ring if you are doing the south east as I want to get a week in mid april before I go os.

Thanks for the tips Seven. I'm packing my semi-dry.

No cave cert but will have a look at Ewens Ponds if possible.

Yes, heading over to the Port Lincoln area, I will have my shark shield in my kit... amazing thing, it's worked so far..... :P

Any clues on Rapid Bay jetty, open or closed?

    cheers
