Nikon D700 Hacked to Shoot Video

  1. A hacker using the Nikon SDK has found a way to capture video on the D700 by tapping into the LiveView data stream.

Good news: The Liveview offers a fast and viable source for video capture

Bad news: The quality is less than 480p resolution

  2. The D700 doesn't have a microphone (limiting how far this hack can go) ... but the D3 does for voice annotation.

I am definitely looking forward to owning a Nikon FX camera with 25MP and full broadcast quality video ... two years ago that would have seemed a bit far fetched, but now seems like a "when" not "if".

  3. like a "when" not "if".

Definately, it is *when* I win the lottery :D

Mike thinks it may work on his D70 also since the D700 and D70 are basically the same Another Hack Thread ^_^

Between this hack and the potential Canon Hack, perhaps the manufacturers may just hack them themselves at some point. Maybe they are waiting for the next models to make us buy yet again, but we can hope....

  4. As the Canon 5d II shoots video, in a limited way (time restraints) I am assuming and hacked camera will have same limitations and you could be seriously risking your sensor.

If you don't go through the sensor you are always going to have the limited quality from a live view system?

For all that hastle, why not go buy a small tiny video camera ?

I think the Nikon D90 has a time limit while the 5D is file size limit, but generally I agree. Hacking the small $150 P&S to shoot RAW is alot less risky to me than messing around with $3,000 cameras.

But being able to shoot stills and video in one body is nice, less to carry. For above water not as much of a pain, but for below water having one rig that does both well is a nice concept, more so for traveling, less so for having both on one dive (at least to me).
