  1. Twenty years ago, commercial whaling was outlawed. But hush-hush meetings between officials have paved the way for its return

Governments are preparing to breach the worldwide whaling ban, legitimising commercial killing of the giant creatures for the first time in more than 20 years.

Key whaling and anti-whaling nations have thrashed out a plan at a series of unpublicised closed-door meetings to allow Japan to kill the leviathans for gain, after outlawing it for two decades. It is to be presented to a special meeting of the official International Whaling Commission (IWC) early next month.

Environmentalists say that the plan amounts to “waving the white flag” to Japan and they fear that it will usher in a new era of legal whaling around the world.

  2. It beggars belief... What are they doing bending to the Japanese (or any nation) anyway... Something needs to be said / done a.s.a.p

  3. Maybe they will try using the state of their economy as an excuse.... bit like post-WWII.

    or

start something else to make it a more multi-pronged campaign?

  4. Years ago I predicted once the big fish and sharks were mostly gone, the whales would be next (again). Looks like it is happening faster than projected. We need massive international outcry. What would put a stop to it is if Ausi's stopped buying autos from their number one trading partner Japan. They would listen to that. Unfortunately the party that was voted in on promises of taking a stand against whaling has bent to the will of Japan.
