There now seems to be a liquidimage mask that shoots 720p HD video as well as a 5mp camera, now down to a depth of 30m or 100ft.

You can also as this photo shows add some video lights too it !

cheesy presenter, but kinda neat demo video of the mask at CES

That looks like a real fun thing to have. Can shoot photos with the still rig and video with that at the same time, of course all me looking up and down at camera settings could make the video a bit disturbing :D Did you see prices listed somewhere?

has them for sale at around $150 depending on size, with each light i think costs $60.

The light actually interests me more, I can't find any stats on it right now. but that is a great price if it works well for a spotter or focus light, which I would hop it does if they are used to light up a scene for a mask camera.

here is some sample footage UW - warning to epilepsy sufferers.. there is no image stabilisation !

judging from the video part with the Manta Ray as well .. you obviously have to remember to look around using your head .. not your eyes ! The video doens't nec see what you see !

I am now sitting here trying to figure out how much I move my eyes as oppossed to my head when I dive (no joking) and it would present a challenge I think, not to mention the angle difference, but I would guess after a dive or two it would be something that can be picked up. Not sure though if I want to switch masks, but it still looks like fun.

  5. I would much rather have this technology put into a TINY 5mp HD video camera that fits in my BCD pocket ... how many of us with HUGE rigs would love to just go for a dive .. have our hands free .. but a video and camera in our pocket .. just incase that once in a life time / we dont believe you unless there's photos things comes along.

Thats my take on it, although I think it is a brilliant gadget, and I may well buy a few lights down the line when i find them available somewhere !

Amen to that Giles. There is usually a few dives during the trip where I do just that, dive without the toys just to enjoy the dive, but having something in the BCD would be perfect. I keep on kicking around the idea of a small Canon OEM housing, maybe a magic filter....but as we keep on seeing things move ahead. Imagine even thinking of getting a 5 Megapixel camera in a mask for $150 a few years back?

And next time we are on a boat together and I do one of those dives, make sure to carry the big rig. Leaving my toys always leads to some good shots to be had :D

  7. Hey that's pretty funny.

    Go Go gadget mask.....

Could be usefull for certain above water wet shots.

  8. Hi all, I'm a beginner and was interested in the liquid image scuba series. I'm going to be snorkeling in Chileno Bay at Cabo San Lucas. Would this product be good for a beginner. Has anyone used it before. Any tips on taking video or pictures underwater. I also have a Canon Powershot S2 IS. Is this a camera I can get a waterproof housing for? Any tips or help for a newbie snorkeling on the Sea of Cortez would be appreciated. Thank you.

As you can see from the demo video, it's very unstable because the users head is usually bobbing around (especially snorkeling). You can see the CMOS wobble effect from the instability. It's fun for about 10 secs then it'll probably cause many to throw up from the movement.

I suggest you use our search function in the forum to find if a housing is available for your camera. If not, I suggest you google it. Good luck and have fun on your vacation in Cabo.

  10. So I guess using this, instead of remarking about someone have good and steady hands we could say, 'Wow, great head"

There are so many lines that can follow what you wrote, I actually cannot think of which one to use first. So I won't :P

I was thinking the same thing. I notice that the mask actually has cross-hairs in the middle of each eye - undoubtedly to remind you to keep the subject in the cross-hairs. Then again, having big cross-hairs in the middle of each eye would be pretty annoying while trying to use a regular still camera...probably more of a novelty than a tool for taking any serious video...

  13. This is only my second post and already Steve has cracked me up.

I agree with you guys. I can't hold my head still enough. My video would look like an earthquake was happening. My Canon Powershot S2 seems to have only one underwater housing in my price range. Ewa marine d-a it looks like a plastic bag for your camera. :drink: Has anyone used this before? What did you think? We are only snorkeling so I don't need anything super fancy. I just don't want it to leak and ruin the camera.I heard somewhere that if I use a polarizing fliter that underwater pictures will come out clearer. Has this been your experience?

Thank you for helping me. :)

Just remember that this is one of those things where you get what you pay for. I had an Ewa Marine years ago, and as long as you're SURE you only want to snorkel with it, it will probably be fine - it just doesn't work if you try taking it down more than a few feet because the pressure almost immediately makes it unusable. IOW, if you plan to do much free-diving, you might have trouble below about 5 ft. I tried using mine on a shallow dive, and found it unusable; it was the last time I used it, and I ended up just considering it an expensive lesson. If Canon makes an OEM housing for the S2, that would be a FAR better choice.

If you're just snorkeling near the surface, I don't think you need a filter (certainly not a red filter), although I've never tried a polarizer so can't say what effect that would have.

  15. Completely agree with Bruce, those Ewa bags are very expensive for what they are and I wouldn't trust one with any cam.

Here coming the embarrassing part. I don't know what a OEM housing is. I could only found the EWA Marine and the Ikelite Underwater Camera Housing, which is out of my price range. Is there another product I'm missing?

Sorry - OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer, in this case Canon. I did a little research, and it doesn't look like Canon made a housing for the S2, and Ikelite has discontinued theirs. Here's an example of what I mean, for the Canon G11 (which would be an excellent camera to consider for your next one, BTW, and also does very well underwater):
