Subtronic and Inon

  1. I`ve been using the Inon z240 for the last two years. Im quite happy with them , and they have been working flawless. I think they are great macrolenses, but latley I have looking for more powerfull flashes for wideangel shooting. I dont think the inon gives enough "reach" shooting wideangel, and i want a varmer light than the Inons

I have been looking at Subtronic Novas. Before i rob a bank to get a hold of them :D I would like to hear peoples experience with the Novas. How does the battery packs works?

    How are ittl working?

Is there anybody using the Midi or the minis?

whats the differense between nova and maxi?

    please help me out

  2. I have a pair of Novas and a pair of Midis and really like the Subtronic strobes. I have had some issues with turnaround time for repairs on the Midis, and that is my only criticism of Subtronic. These strobes have a significantly wider angle of coverage than my Inons and this makes them much easier to use for wide angle and fisheye shooting. My impression is also that the edges of the light field are a little more diffuse than the Inons, which seems to help avoid getting a hot spot. I also prefer the warmer light for most situations. I rarely need the power except that recycling time is almost non-existent when using the lower power settings that I normally use. Battery packs work great on the Novas. I do have the Heinrichs iTTL but have never got around to using it, I'm pretty happy with manual for wide angle.

I would use the Subtronics all the time, but for travel and macro, the small size of the Inons, is an advantage.

  3. Hello Lasse,

I have been using old Subtronic Alpha Pro for WA. Only Manual. I don't know no i-TTL system for the old Subtronic Alpha Pro. I do like the ability to reduce the power to 1/64. Useful with schools of fish and on CFWA.

This example is f/8 1/100 and two Subtronic at 1/64 power. Don't know if i-TTL would work...

  4. Hi again,

are you sure you need more power for WA?

  5. Hi again,

are you sure you need more power for WA?

I think about it the opposite way -

Can you ever have enough of power for WA? :D

  6. I have been using the Subtronic Novas for about 9mths now. I love the light from them, color and range of coverage. I only shoot manual so don't know about TTL. I have had an issue with one of them and just sent it in and am tracking the turn around. I also shoot Inons for macro 2xD2000s and they have been problem free. Have also considered selling them and picking up a pair of Minis as the Novas are just to big for some situations also could consolidate cords and chargers. I did get the double battery pack/arm and would suggest this as I can get three dives in shooting 3/4 - full power on one charge. Any of the WA photos in our Chuuk, Yap, Mapelo/Cocos, Raja Ampat and Lembeh galleries where taken with the Novas. Remember one strobe arm will be the battery so adding another strobe arm is useful, IMHO.

  7. A pair of subtronic Novas, defenitly sounds attempting. but, i have problems understanding all the information on their hompage. Does the novas have internal batterypacks? Or do they only have battery pack in the strobearm?

How does the the strobe arm battery work? How long will the different batteries last? What is a double battery pack? what combination to choose?

You can buy the novas with 116° average spread or

wide angle reflector and domeport with 135° spred . which one to choose?

Is there anybody that have used their focus lights? The scout or the shine? The new ones i supposed to be led lights?

A lot of questions. Can anybody help me out?

Terrible website isn't it? I believe the Novas only come with the external packs in the strobe arms. The strobe arm battery packs have worked well for me shooting for hours - but as I said I usually use low power settings. They work with the UCLS arms and connectors, and have a single cord used to plug into the strobe (S6) and for charging.

I could not find the reference to the 135 degree spread version on the website, but I imagine if one shoots fisheye a lot it could be helpful.
