I recently purchased a Hugyfot gear for my Tokina 12-24 (Nikon mount). It came on the post yesterday, and I tried to put it on the lens. It's the first time I use a "geared" lens, so I have no experience on putting gears.
What I found is that the gear comes so tight on the lens that I barely can put it on. Should this be that way? If putting the gear was difficult, removing it was almost impossible.
I'm starting to think that perhaps the gear doesn't fit my lens.... what do you think?
Regards,
Juanma
Yeah they are all tight.
It helps to humidify the internal o-ring with a bit of water on a towel.
Lens gears are notorously tight to fit but you don't want it to fall off when using it. Try warming it with a hair drier before fitting it.
I use hugyfot housing (and gear) but the Sigma 10-20 instead of the Tokina. It is a very tight fit as well.

I use Sea&Sea gears which have a rubber O-ring inside. I don't know if yours is the same, but if you remove the O-ring and cut it into several pieces (3-4) and re-install the pieces so that there are small gaps between them, the fit will loosen. Start with small gaps and remove more bits of O-ring until the gear fits the way you like. I had the same problem and this solution worked on my 12-24 zoom gear. I hope this helps you, too.
Hi all,
Thank you for your replies. I'll try them and let you know. Bentoni, the hugyfot gears also have the O-rings (two of them). I think I'll try the other methods first (wetting the rubber ring or the hairdryer one)... it scares me a little bit to chop the O-ring, although I'll do it if necessary.
Thanks again
My recommendation really depends on exactly how tight the gear is on the lens. Sometimes, its just really snug, so a tiny trim of the oring, or heating it. However if the gear is extremely tight, and nearly impossible to move, I recommend going the trimming route. Just be sure to trip is small increments. Generally, an extra oring is supplied in case you make a big boo boo.
