Point & Shoot O-ring???

5 posts
  1. I have a Sony P&S camera and it needs an o-ring for the housing. It's not the main blue o-ring but the black one right next to it. I think they call it a drip ring. Sony could not provide me with any information on it (funny). I was able to get a local camera store to track it down but the o-ring / drip ring was $60.00 at his cost. Does anyone have information on this or places I could check out. The drip ring is almost 1/2 the cost of the case. Need to order one ASAP for a trip in May.

  2. needs an o-ring

Why ? is the old one truly damaged ?

Pull it out and look at it. Some of the main seals in these P&S housings are custom and are square section rather than round. You need to be careful with this determination as if stored with the rings in they do take a 'set' and change shape. If you can refer to a 'new' one so much the better.

If it is round section then it is very unlikely to be 'custom' - take it down to the local bearing & seal supply shop and try and find someone who seems to know what they are talking about - they should be able to supply you one.

Failing that try to find a local machinist - they are used to cutting groves to fit these things and as a side effect are also used to measuring and identifying o-rings.

Absolute fall back is to have them make one (sounds scary but it is not), you need to find a length of the correct diameter and cut and join it. This is not a preferred solution, but it does work, I have cut down larger o-rings to make smaller ones.

Test it all before use - fill with tissue paper and place in the bottom of say a swimming pool for a while (overnight is great).

Thanks, It does look to be square rather then round. I used a small dental tool and reset it in the grove. It now looks the rest of the o-ring all the way around the case. Now I will do a quick test on it before my trip. Thanks again for the help!!!

  4. It's a metric size o-ring. There are vendors for these but the trick is to accurately measure its size - cross section & ID. Do not replace with a US size o-ring. One is probably almost the size of your o-ring but not exactly. Close doesn't count when it comes to o-ring sizes.

This is a table of metric o-ring sizes which should help identify the proper size.

Dental tools or anything metallic is not good for use on plastic parts. Too easy to scratch groove which invites a flood.

P.S. They call these housings disposable for a reason.

  5. Thanks for the post that is great o-ring information! I took my time with the dental tool and never used the sharp point. Just the side. Disposable might be true but it has been a great starter camera for me after a few changes. After I get a few sets of doubles I will look in to the upgrade.
