G10, OEM Housing - 28mm?

  1. Curious about Wide Angle and the OEM Housing for Canon.

Looking at this purchase, and though I mainly shoot macro it is nice to have the option to shoot a 'little' wide. The question is with the OEM Housing (WP-DC28) is it possible to shoot at 28mm without serious vignetting?

I have looked at the other options for this housing and would prefer to upgrade my G7 to the G10 with OEM Housing and YS110 Alpha as that is what is readily available (and within budget!).

I am hoping not to have to zoom to shoot a wider scene! Anyone who can comment, please do!

PS: I realize that no 67mm threaded WA lenses are possible on this current housing and am okay with shooting 28mm only...if that is possible,

Still waiting for an adapter to shoot my Inon UCL165's, but I have heard these are in the making!

    Thanks for the advice

The OEM housing does not vignette at any focal length AFAIK.

    Thank you Mickey!

Can anyone who has used the housing confirm?

I know Ikelite uses a dome port to get rid of vignetting and add sharpness at the 28mm setting. Though I understand there housing is configured very different from the OEM hosuing (with its large rectangular nose).

    Steve,

I use the setup and there is zero vignetting. Confirmed. Proven... LOL

    Hi Steve,

Although you won't get any vignetting at full wide underwater, you will not get the full 28mm angle of coverage with the OEM housing underwater. With the lens shooting through a flat port you'll have an angle of coverage loss of about 25% due to refraction from the light going from water to air. You may remember this form your open water scuba course as to why everything looks 25% bigger underwater. So underwater your 28mm lens will have the angle of coverage of about a 35mm lens. Ikelite's wide angle port for their G10 housing is a dome that corrects for the refraction, thereby getting you back to the 28mm angle of coverage.
