New iMacs, Minis, Towers, Laptop Bumps

  1. Some bumps and improvements, some speed increases. Option now for 256 Gig SSD, but kind of pricey.

The new towers have the Nehalem" Xeon processors and a next-generation system architecture, so suppossed big improvements, plus drop on based price.

AIn't upgrading my Macs because of any of this quite yet  (Subject to seeing real world benchmarks :P )

  2. I have one of Apple's 256GB SSDs and it is slow. (<100MB/s). I would advise against it especially at their price.

  3. Thanks for the heads up. I am going to stay a bit more on the sidelines since I am set pretty well right now. Some preliminary benchmarks (with links back to Apple's site) Barefeats and some of the numbers seem okay, but again I think I will hold off. The new video card options do look interesting though, have you gotten a chance to see those in real life?

  4. Ahhh the computer race. Is it just me, or is it every time we upgrade and get the fast editing system, a new one comes out a month later??

Fortunately I have reached the point where my setup, at least my desktop, performs pretty much everything as fast or faster than I can think or type, so there is little compelling reason to upgrade. But then I don't do video....yet.

  6. One way to stay in front for abit longer with a new system is simple.......overclock it.

However I don't think you can do that with standard MACS.

Nope. Watch anything I buy then wait a month. Digital camera, stereo, computer whatever. Guranteed upgrade coming. :P

  8. Just got one of the Nehalem Mac Pros last night!

Lower clock speeds & more cores - laid out better for speed & memory access is the advertised improvement. We shall see what real world usage is... The reason I went for 8 core 2.26 came from research, but primairly advice from someone who works for Adobe. Photoshop will be making use of more cores as will Snow Leopard - coming out in a few months. (Of course would have loved to get the 2.66 but I couldn't touch the price increase for that small processor speed increase)

Be interesting to see what happens; at least the computer world keeps us on our toes, I'll give them that!

I will know more after I receive my machine & get it set up in 2/3 weeks.

    Best Carol
