Canon G10

hi,

i am just wondering if i should upgrade to DSLR or just stay with point and shoot.

right now i am using a Canon A640 with a WP - DC8 underwater casing and sea&sea YS90DX strobe for about 2 yrs now

and i thought its time for a change but i don't know if i should do it.

any opinions or suggestions are welcome.

i have been thinking and reading about the G10 for awhile but still unsure if i should switch to G10, if i decide

to stick to P/S.

the problem with me is, i am not prepare to spend alot of money on a DSLR setup is one reason that is holding back

but if i can get one with a reasonable price i will consider.

i have the budget for the G10 setup but not quite for a DSLR. although i like to have one.

if anybody out there has the same problem as myself and has resolved please give me some help which direction to take.

BTY, does any body if there is a new G series coming out.

There are lots of threads on DSLR versus point and shoot, but if you decide on the G10 I'd look at the Fisheye FIX G10 housing and add the 15mm wide angle port. I've looked at it and it seems like a very nice compact way to go.

Patima supply alumimum housing for G10 and sold few hundreds of them already, I heard.

Patima housing is marketed by Reefphoto in US.

There are lots of threads on DSLR versus point and shoot, but if you decide on the G10 I'd look at the Fisheye FIX G10 housing and add the 15mm wide angle port. I've looked at it and it seems like a very nice compact way to go.

just one question, can the YS90 strobe with fibre optic be able to attach to the FIX 10 housing,

i have not seen the actual housing so i am unsure.

if you happen to have pictures of it, can you post them.

what do you think of the Bar 10 housing?

The new Sea & Sea YS-110 Alpha has all issues corrected and the DS-TTL works flawless with the FIX G10 and Patima G10 housings.

I am planning on getting a g10. I have two 90dx's that I was planning on using with it. WHat limitations am I going to run into? Am I betteroff selling them and picking up different strobes? I really didn't want to do that.

i have the YS90DX strobes with a fiber optic which i am using now and it works pretty good on my P/S.

i have been using it for about 2 yrs now.

what kind of issues are you refering to. can you share with me.

I have a Canon 40D as well as a Canon XT, but I chose to go with the Canon G10 for my next underwater setup. I'm in the process of selling my Olympus C-5050 and housing and wanted to go to a TTL system. I also am on a budget and wanted to keep my Ikelite DS-125 strobe.

The G10 is small and I can get the Ikelite eTTL housing with tray for about $600. A housing for my DSLR's would run well over $1400 with ports and be much larger in size. I understand the limitations of a P&S format compared to a DSLR, and I certainly know the problems involved with both TTL and manual, but I'm going to give the G10/Ikelite housing a shot and see how it works out.

It is a difficult question to answer. I always want a smaller camera so it is easy to decide. I got the Canon SD600, then the Canon G9, and now the G10 with Sea&Sear YS-110A. All information I have and all the pictures I took with these pictures are on my dive web site at dive.vinaworld.com. I do not care much for DSLR since the G9 and G10 very much allow me all the controls I need. I wish the lenses could be better but I am happy with the one built with the camera. I have no problem with the quality of the pictures.

I'm going to give the G10/Ikelite housing a shot and see how it works out.

I am using a G10/Ikelite setup and couldn't be happier. My buddy uses the Seatool housing with the Fisheye Wide Angle lens with his G10 and he too couldn't be happier. The Seatool is obviously much more compact and it has a "real" wide angle solution, but is it really worth the extra 500-600 bucks for the housing and then another 500-600 for the lens? If your a wide angle guy there are some solutions for the Ikelite housing "Dyron has a replacement port and lenses, Ikelite has a "sorta" wide angle wet dome and there are some full wide angle options in the works". The Seatool is more compact, but unless your some kind of "girly" man you won't have a problem handling it. I have the Housing, Camera, dual handle tray, Ball Socket Arm/DS51 and have no problems carrying it when hiking down the goat trails on the peninsula to my local dive sites. As mainly a shore diver, compactness, weight and streamlining is key and I have had no issues with my system, even on the most agreesive entries / hikes.

As far as the debate between getting the DSLR setup and a P'n'S. I think it all depends on budget. If you have the money to spend, I would go right for the SLR. It will outpreform "with the proper user" any point and shoot period. The G10 "IMHO" is the best point and shoot money can buy, but is in no way a SLR. I personally couldn't afford a SLR setup, so the G10 was an easy choice. But, I am already looking into purchasing a mid range DSLR for my topside pics, which in time I can get a housing for.

Among Canon Digital cameras I like Canon G10. The G10 has a wealth of features. Have a look at http://www.checkcost.co.uk/digital-cameras/c/4368. This may help u to narrow down your search. On a first glance the Canon G10 looks very similar to its predecessor, the G9, but there are a number of key external and internal changes underneath the matt black exterior. It's an excellent camera for shooting outdoor shots, but a bit larger n a bit expensive.

Bear in mind that it isn't so much the price of a dslr camera as it is the housing and ports and gears that you will need. There are exceptions, but the housings usually cost far more than the camera and you may well need two lenses and two ports for those lenses.

Also consider size. Most dslr/housing/port setups are quite large, compared to a P&S like a G10.

perhaps you could rent/borrow/try a dslr before buying.

I used to think if it wasn't for the prohibitive price of the DSLR housing I would much rather use my DSLR on my dives.....until our last dive trip. I finally ran into a few people with decent (mind you, not the "full") setup and I would hate to use a DSLR underwater. They are really huge without a strobe - they are beyond cumbersome with the full setup. I thought my little Canon A620 was a pain in the butt but it looked petite next to one of their. their 2 cameras made it hard for the other few people to use the rinsing buckets on the boats since one of theirs used the full width of the bucket. If I were only diving to take pics there would be a reason to have one but there are so many wonderful pictures out there there is little chance I will take things better than what has been done. I just want to record my dive a little bit so I remember it better.

I found that a camera sometimes is a burden on dives so I will just clip mine to my BC and it will stay mostly out of my way. You couldn't do that with a DSLR.

I am thinking of ways to convince the hubby I need a G10 for our trip in Dec to Fiji. I really want to shoot RAW and I have hope the image stabilization feature may help get less blur.

SeaTool's sister company is Fisheye. The G10 case is sold under the Fisheye label; BackScatter SeaTool/Fisheye G10 Housing
