I'm leaving tomorrow night on Cathay out of LAX for Indonesia and wanted to see if anyone's had any experience with Cathay's baggage policy. I check my scuba gear through and typically carry-on all my u/w photo gear in a non-descript, legal size rolling bag and the camera, lenses and laptop in a normal size back pack. Anyone ever have them weigh your carry-on or "personal" items? With strobes, housing, etc. the roller weighs in at about 30 lbs and the back pack about 15+lbs and it's never been a problem. Just don't want any surprises.
Thanks!
Phil
Hi Phil,
FWIW, They did not check our carry on bags last year when we flew to Bali. Our carry on's are legal size and I tried to make my 40 pounder look light when I placed it in the overhead. With the new rules on checked luggage people seem to be using larger and larger carry on bags which is actually OK from my perspective as ours look positively tiny by comparison. We try and sit in the back of the aircraft which usually gives us first access to the overheads.
I also think it is a good strategy to be extremely nice to the check in person.
Have a great time!

Just a reference point for next time. Its hard to keep up with all this baggage stuff. Look at EVA Air Elite Class. Now - 2 bags @ 61# each. LAX/TPE/DPS $1316 RT (3rd bag or overweight <70# $109). I was going to fly Singapore Air in Sep, but only 50# bags & higher overweight charges ($109x3). 3rd bag $109. Some of these policies make no sense. EVA Elite is like Singapore Executive Economy used to be. Next year - who knows.........
I just got back. No problems taking my legal size rolling bag and a backpack. Like Imaslepper said, I was very nice to the check-in person and tried to make it look light when putting it in the overhead. I even got away with 3 carry-on's on the way back!
