Full feature or the minimalist?

  1. Given that the mfg are having to update housings every couple of years if not sooner and that housing cost quite a bit more than bodies I thought I would pose this question to folks. For instance, you often hear I can put the latest and greatest XXX in my housing for YYY and have access to everything but the "pretty little fishy mode button" which I do not care about cause I have still access to the "fugly fish function" or visa versa my ZZZ fits in the QQQ housing but I lost access to the "mermaid mode" and I just gotta have it.

There is also the case where the mfg decides for you and says to make the housing really compact decide not to allow the pop up flash so you have to use the hot shoe or visa - versa, it has a hot shoe but no bulkhead so you have to use the internal flash that sucks your battery life.

Now there are the absolutes like full manual expose control but what if you could not switch to manual focus? Or say you had to always shoot in 16:9 instead of 3:2 just in case you wanted to shoot a movie.

Besides the functional side there is also the practical side. More buttons means there is more chance of one leaking.

So what do you gotta have?

  2. If it can make a housing that is affordable, go for it :vava:

    1.) On/Off

    2.) Shutter Release

    3.) f/Stop

    4.) Shutter Speed

    5.) ISO

    6.) Some strobe connection

More than on the old Nikonos just about :P

I have a Canon so set it up for review anyway. Cards are big enough so no need to delete images. Fiber optics would be nice. The first SeaTool for the XTI seemed to handle fiber optics in a smaller format, but perhaps the full pop up was better for the camera.
