Canon 500D/Rebel T1i: Official thread

Just read on dpreview that Canon will soon release the EOS 500D!

From the images posted on dpreview, the size and the positions of the controls are identical to 450D.

If this is the case, I will be very happy cause I will not need to invest in new housing!

With 1080p (and 720p + SD) video ... here we go again. Will be very interesting to compare the video functionality of this V 5dmkii–– wonder if they've taken any of the collective whining on board.

The smaller chip will make it be easier to shoot wide in a housing. Oh boy.

and if they do fit the 40d housings, we can be in the water from day 1....

• Up to 29 min 59 sec (or max file size 4 GB)–– same 4GB limit as 5dmkii

I guess the smaller sensor will make it better for macro video than the 5D Mk2. The inherent DoF difference (when the subject is the same size in the frame) between FF and APS-C is significant.

As expected, the 500D/T1i is down featured to protect the 5D2. It's essentially a 720p video machine. BUT it will record longer as 720p is smaller than 1080p. It will be interesting to see if there are manual controls but I doubt it.

Darren, I think you'd better wait for the 60D which is due out in Sep. I would think it would have better controls. I think the 1D series is due for a refresh but with the economy the way it is. If the inventory channels are still full, they may hold off.

What I really like more is the new 270EX, nice and compact and should be powerful enough for people pics. Combined with the 5D2 high ISO, 24 or 35 f1.4 and a diffuser, it'd be a perfect party combo.

Looks like it will fit the 450D housings as it is, just found some side by side comparison pictures on the site below.

Only now the metering button is replaced with white balance...

Now I'm really looking forward to this camera... :-)

Canon nomenclature strikes again! Nikon is going to have issues soon as well. They will have to upgrade the D90 to compete with this and they are at the last digit of their pattern, unless they go backwards.

It's called the Rebel T1i in the US. I think the XXXD is only for ROW.
