Compact, modest strobe for point & shoot?

  1. I am interested in a compact single strobe as an upgrade for my elderly Canon S70. I am using the factory housing and don't need to light up vast wide-angle vistas. The YS27 looks like a good choice, being compact, affordable, and having a GN of 20 which should be OK for the short-range shooting I do. Users here seem to be happy with it, for the most part.

Are there any better options around the $350 mark? That's with tray and arm, from scubatoys.

Whenever I eventually upgrade my camera, it will be to a nicer P&S, not a DSLR. I need to get a strobe that will have some longevity, but I do not need to buy support for fancy camera features that I probably won't have later.

I realize that at this price point I'll be shooting manual. That's OK.

By the way, most of my diving is in cold green water, with visibility of 10-25 ft. This is about as good as it gets with the internal strobe:

(And that required a lot of touchup to get rid of the worst of the backscatter.)

And this is about as good as "wide angle" available light gets:

Even a tiny bit more light there would be a wonderful improvement.

    Thanks for your input.

  2. If you don't need an electrical sync connection, the new Inon S-2000s looks REALLY nice.

  3. I'd even consider a secondhand YS-90 off ebay. You shouldn't pay much more than $100... But I do agree with Jeremy. A 2000 would be the mutts nutts!

  4. The S-2000 looks very nice, thanks for the tip. I can't find many vendors, though.

I'll look at the YS-90 too, used gear can be great sometimes.

    Here's an S-2000 that's currently on ebay:

Only negatives seem to be the $40 cost to ship and the fact that the manual is in Japanese. You could probably get an English language manual without too much difficulty.
