Z240 -confusion!!

  1. Hi acquired two Z-240 today , I cannot make head or tail of the manual ..I am shooting with a Canon 20D in Subal.I used to use Sea and Sea strobes on manual or two SB102 .Got the Inons as they are very small.

What setting do you use External auto (is this sorta similar to TTL in a way) or M0.5-6 (what is this) or full ?

Is there a way to switch the aiming light off completly ?

    :D

I feel really dumb asking these questions

With external auto it lseems that you set the strobes dial to the same f-stop as your camera reading? At what distance is this relevant?

The following link should answer some of your questions. Near the end of the article, it also explains Aiming Light Control.

    Inon Strobe Information

I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to post them here.

  3. the link posted is slightly more helpful than the worthless manuals, but not much. the long and short is you turn the left hand dial to M (manual) and adjust the light output with the right hand dial (make sure the little magnet is installed under the right hand allen screw). if you need more power turn the left dial to full (one more stop and no control from the right hand dial).

if the aiming light switch is in the center position, it should be off unless you press it (then it stays on for 10 seconds or so). if you press it and turn right or left (a concession to left-handers?) it stays on.

the other thing i'll add is that although it's small, it's very negatively buoyant and after fighting this on a few trips i'm adding buoancy which will negate some of it's size advantage.

    i'd appreciate buoancy tips

Little magnet- I where is this located .I dont see it on the Z-240 type 3

Thanks for the tips. How would you control the second strobe - I have the option to also sync it to the housing or would one use it on a slave function.

  5. Type 3 has no magnet but a switch you depress and turn to keep down. Same like the light switch. Make sure you use long storage NiMH batteries like Sanyo Eneloops if you are going to use the LED light often. Heat buildup with LED is actually worse than halogen.

For multi strobe combination, you can use a Y sync cord using one port on the housing with 2 connectors for your 2 strobes. Dual Sync cords protect you from having no strobes should one side fail and allows more flexible arm lengths. 3rd option is optical slave mode. For ensured firing, you have to get a fiberoptic cable to link to the other strobe. That can be a PITA.

If you think operating this in manual is bad... wait til you try getting eTTL. :D I hear aliwal is now at 30m viz so the South Coast diving must be great now.
