  1. Hi all,

Hoping to go for two weeks in the Solomons in august (or maybe PNG but for now my question is about Solomons) and a few days in Brisbane area. No liveaboard (I'm accompanied with non divers).

What would you suggest in he Solomons (Uepi is a must but not more than 5 days for me) where else in the Sol. would you recommend?

Same question for a few days around Brisbane, someone suggeted me Straddie... good pick?

    thanks for your suggestions.

    Luko

  2. Hi Luko,

I did a trip to Gizo in the Solomons a few years ago, was a great trip! Some really good diving, both wrecks and wall dives, and lots to do for non-divers (tours, fishing, markets, surfing, and my favorite bar in the world - Fatboys, etc). Check out Dive Gizo for a bit more info.

As for Brisbane, yes, Straddie is great. The diving's good, with mantas and leopard sharks in Summer and grey nurse sharks in winter. Point Lookout on the eastern side of the island is a great little relaxing town. The other place I'd reccommend (for both diving and non diving) is Byron bay, about an hour and a half south of Brisbane.

Good luck with it, sounds like a good trip!

    Ryan.

    Thanks Ryan,

I've already had a look at Fatboys in Gizo, looks great. Would you also recommend it as the accom to settle for a few days around Gizo. My girls are looking for a decent beach while I'm diving. I was also tyhinking about vonavona lagoon a little south of Gizo, it looked brilliant in glossies, Zipolo habu resort looked appealing : any feedback?

I'll check out Point Lookout then!

    Many thanks.

  4. We stayed at the Gizo hotel, which was nice. Clean, good pool, and great food. Gizo itself isn't on a beach though.

Fatboys is on another island not far from Gizo, and a lot of the dive sites were around it. I didn't see the accommodation, so I can't comment on that, but it's on a bit of a beach. Nothing that you could compare to Australian beaches of course, but there was sand, and snorkelling not far out.

There is some other accommodation on the same island as Fatboys, that was supposed to be quite good and probably worth checking out. Didn't get there though sorry, and can't remember the name.

If you wanted to see some shots from our trip, they're here. I was shooting with a compact camera then, would love to get back now that I have an SLR.

    Ryan.

  5. Try these folks Dive Munda - they have just become the proud parents of an Aquatica D90 called George.
