Playing around a bit last weekend with some fun props and two great models. Everything was shot w/ the 17-40 hence the unwelcome distortion in some of them. This was my first time back in the pool this year, just experimenting.:
Lighting was the sun from behind, and 2 flashes on the housing.
All comments (good, bad, how to improve) welcome.
Cheers

Here's one that the model really liked:

Good start to the summer James. Nice clean lighting.
I've got my first shoot of the season next week.
Well done James!
All the pool shots poping up here lately makes me think should I try it out as well
Hey James!
Awesome work.
Obviously I have 100's of questions given my recent pool adventures but ill try to keep them to a minimum
What sort of apertures do you shoot at? (strange I know but i'm trying to work out whats the best DOF for a human subject considering that the background is almost always irrelevant so a shallow DOF can be used I guess)
Who pays for the make - up etc? was this a pleasure shoot or for some one?
What time of day to you prefer to shoot at?
Cheers
Cal
Oh and brilliant shots! haha
I love the 1st one

I think number 1 and number 3 are the stars of the show....number 1 being my favorite.
Great shots!
Hi Cal,
I typically shoot w/ the 17-40L lens on full frame. That's like using the 12-24 Nikon or Tokina on your camera. I shoot the headshots at 40mm and usually use F10 or F11 with the highest shutterspeed I can get to make a black background. Since I'm in pretty close (hence some bad distortion sometimes) I use really minimal strobe power.
I would like to get back a bit farther for my next shoot and use a different lens - like a 24-70 (18-50 in DX terms) to get a different perspective. I think I'd have to lower my f-stop for that in order to get the same exposures.
I have a few makeup professionals that I work with who I met through various places on the net. They are usually happy to work with me provided I give them some of the photos to use for promotional work. I don't know why, but makeup artists here in Houston want to show that their makeup won't run - it could be the heat and humidity I suppose :-)
