Can I use Sanyo Eneloops in my SB-105s ?

  1. As the title suggests really. Can the Sanyo Eneloop batteries be used in the SB105s. I am unsure about the rating of these batteries, and don't want to order them if they are going to fry my strobes.

As a secondary question, I have read that these batteries are a bit wider/thicker than standard AA batteries, so does anyone know if they will physically fit?

    Thanks in advance.

    Gary.

  2. I have been using a variety of rechargeables in my sb105 for about 4 years - all good so far.

But have not tried the eneloops.

Thanks for the reply. Any recommendations on the ones you have used? If so, why are they better than the others?

  4. One type I use are Duracell 2650mAh another are Energizer 2300mAh

What I do is use one set in my Sea&Sea 90duo and the other set in the SB-105, this lasts me for the two dives I do in a day. On average I take about 160 shots @ 1/4 power as most of my stuff is macro.

I have some of the Energizers already. The main reason for me asking is the different mAh ratings. I don't want to put anything in the strobes which might damage them because they are "too powerful".

I guess as long as they are AA size, they will be fine.

At the moment most of my stuff is macro too, so 160 shots is not too bad.

  6. Additionally, I never put freshly charged batteries in the strobes ie, straight from the charger, I always let them cool down before putting them in the strobe. When I am on a liveaboard I use Lithiums as I find there is often not enough time overnight to charge and let them cool down.

  7. Ahh, Lithiums, now I am even more confused. I have seen some rechargeables with a rating of 2850 mAh. Will these damage the strobes? Sorry for all the questions, but as I said, I am easily confused !

Don't confuse total battery capacity with power. Standard alkaline batteries have a voltage of about 1.5 V. Standard rechargeable NiMH batteries have a voltage of about 1.2 V. Rechargeable batteries have varying capacities i.e. the number of times a set can be used to charge a strobe but this is not a measure of their power. In theory, the engineers who designed the strobes put in a charging circuit that will limit the speed at which a battery can charge the capacitors. If they did their job well, then any battery type will be able to charge the strobe as long as there is enough capacity left in the battery. Think of the mAH rating of a battery as how many electrons the battery can hold. Thus a 2800 mAH battery has twice as many electrons available to charge the strobe as a 1400 mAH battery.

In the real world this is not always so obvious since you have to worry about the resistance of the circuit and the resistance inside the battery but the bottom line is that larger capacity batteries do not have more capability to damage your strobes than lower capacity ones, but they can charge your strobe more often.

    Hope this helps

    Bill
