YS-110a vs 2x YS-27DX

  1. I am very new to underwater photography and such looking for advice to point me in the right direction to my future strobe(s) selection.

I am using a Oly 560uz with the matching housing. Taking pictures in the waters around Vancouver Island. I am wanting to use the camera for both Wide and Macro shots. I am not looking to upgrade to SLR anytime in the future but still want to take pictures I can be proud of to show to friends and family. So here lays my question...

My budget allows me to either purchase one YS-110a or twin YS-27dx strobes from Sea and Sea. I've read the specs between the two strobes and the only big difference between the two is the Beam Angle. Seeing as I do want to take both wide and macro, maybe leaning towards more wide shots than macro... Which setep should I lean towards? one YS-100a or twin YS-27dx?

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome Buddy,

The 560uz is a pretty big zoom camera from memory and I'm not really sure how you will go with lens travel and vignetting?

But anyway, the strobes that you are looking at are both quality units, but, with big differences. From what I have read from other 'users' reports on the YS27DX, the guide number might be a bit "enthusiastic"? Reports indicate that it might not be as bright and powerful as suggested. Hopefully some of the 'users' that have reported these shortcomings in the past will chime in and back me up? Anyway, you should be pretty safe if you use 2 of the 27's and stick to close focus wide angle. This is where you use the strobes to light some prominent subject in the foreground and allow ambient light to expose the background. I think that you might be slightly hamstrung trying to use the YS110alpha as a single for wide-angle? This is a pretty big 'ask' of any strobe. . . .

    Usual governances. . . . IMHO :good:
