Am travelling with family end May 2009 to Bali and proceeding to Amed where we will be staying for 5-6 nights. So will have access to Tulamben, Seraya and sites around Amed. From Amed i was thinking of going to Pemuteran for a few nights. Can someone tell me how long the journey from Amed to Pemuteran by road will be aproximately ? I have dived, Tulamben, Menjangan, Pemuteran beofre. Any other recommendations around Bali or around or close to Amed ?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Cheers,

From Tulamben to Menjangan is abt 3hrs. Permuteran is abt 15-20mins before Menjangan, so the journey should be around 2hr 45mins.

if u dont find any ceremony in your way...we spent 5 hours
Do the gillis around Amed (best Bali dives for big stuff) and Manta Point in Nusa Penida...amazing
Just drove from Seririt to Gilimanuk today in 1.3hr. Roads are under construction along a few sections with no end in sight. I drove local style to make it. I've been told that the west coast road is under construction in a few sections too. Been like that for months. So check with your dive ops for latest road conditions.
If you spend an extra day around Amed or Tulamben not diving, you can cut across the newly paved road from Tulamben to Besakih and then shoot up to Seririt.
I'll be posting an update on the muck sites around the area soonish.

Thanks Drew,
I do have a few days in Amed so will definately consider the seririt option, and coming from you, obviously there is some good muck diving. Will wait to get some input on the muck site's "soonish" hopefully within a month ?

Bali, like everywhere else, goes through a funk where it's not as interesting in the muck. Probably between life cycles which happens during the lunar cycles. I think it's going through one right now but who knows next month? I just wanted to test a lens config in real conditions.
Secret Bay was actually awesome for viz yesterday. We had 20m clear viz on the wreck with the schooling fish. I rushed out to change to WA only to have the alarm go beep for the rush job. By the time I fixed it, the viz went to crap again.
I mention the extra day so that you can pass over 500m altitude in the drive. There use to be a few DCS cases in the old days because nobody thought it was a problem...but it was

Thanks Drew will keep in mind your last tip on DCS LOL But i am planning on going to Pemuteran post Amed so secret bay should be a possibility. Last time i was there we could not make it as the dive shop advised it was not the best time ??? But we did find some fine critter diving right there out side the resort at a small jetty which the dive shop will not reveal to just anybody! Hopefully will get some dives at secret Bay this time.

Secret Bay is usually pretty good because the artificial reef structures are permanent. There were pictus and striatus, black harlequin ghost pipe fish, ambon scorpion fish and a few other juveniles at secret bay. That's always worth a dive if you're near.
The structures also give certain lighting opportunities one doesn't find in natural environments:
My attempt at mimicking Helmut Newton.
Really nice lighting drew..the pic portrays the possibilities very well. Secret Bay here i come

NB: Mr. Newton would be proud of this work
Brain fart... it's steve meisel's photo I wanted to imitate.
Diggy,
We've discovered a driver in Bali that we really enjoy riding with. His car is clean, comfortable and air conditioned and he speaks English very well. His name is Eddy, local phone 081 2381 5626. email eddybehappynet@hotmail.com. I can't help with local diving though since we've only been through on our way to live-aboards.

LOL drew thats a new word for me " brain fart" Nice one
One can always rephrase and edit the earlier lines " : Mr. Newton would be proud of this work" although in all honesty i checked out Steven Meisel after your post. First time i heard of him. Absolutely brilliant pictures taken by him from the few that i browsed.

Bali... I have been diving Tulamben, Ahmed and Nusa Lembongan. It's that small island off the coast of Padang bai. I loved the diving there we had some pretty strong currents but the dives were fanstastic. I think the dive center was called 'dive world' or diving world or something like that.
