Some Indian Ocean i.d.'s please

  1. All taken in the Maldives last month:

1 Is this an Undulated Moray...or just a colour variant of a Giant Moray? It seems to have a different shaped forehead to the latter.

2 The nearest I can get to this is a Banded Sergeant (Abudefduf septemfasciatus) but all the pics I find show them with more bands and somewhat darker bands. However, this one was in a light sandy area and may have faded its colours

3 Pink Whipray (Himantura fai) or Jenkin's Whipray (Himantura jenkinsi) or.......? Can find a bit of stuff about both but nothing to help differentiate

  2. I'm no expert, but your moray looks like Hawaii's undulated morays. The giant or java morays here have a more blunt head with a pattern on their bodies unlike that of the undulated. Also the undulated have dissimilar patterns on their head and body, while the giant has the same pattern on their head and body.

  3. Thanks for the confirmation Jerry - very helpful. Never got any help with the other two which is a pity

  4. Hi Jim,

The damselfish is Abudefduf septemfasciatus, their color is variable and they get lighter or darker depending on their mood or if they are mating. The ray is most probably Himantura jenkinsi; H. fai is very similar but it's occurrence in the Indian Ocean is uncertain, whereas H. jenkinsi is common in the Indian Ocean.

Thanks for that - very helpful. Also thanks for updating the i.d. resource list - again very useful.
