Unable to fire strobes in Live-view

5 posts
  1. Hi everyone,

I was a little puzzled after my first trip with the 40D and ikelite housing. The strobes fired fine when I was using the viewfinder.

I wanted to try out the Live-view, but the strobes did not fire for all 7 shots. I was afraid my sync-cord flooded, but it was dry as a whistle.

Is this a limitation of LV? Or was there something wrong with my settings for the custom functions or something? The selector switch on the bottom of the TTL module in the housing is set to DS125, which is what i'm using. I tried shooting in M and Av, but no success either.

I tried a 580EX mounted on the 40D, and it fired fine when using LV. So it's probably something about the camera to housing connection? I'm not sure...

    Any help is much appreciated!

When using LV underwater did you achieve focus-lock? I've found that with my D300 the flash function will not fire (and the camera wont trip the shutter) if there is no focus lock. It frustrates me because sometimes I want to shoot nightime shots with fill-in flash but if there's no focus lock the D300 stubbornly refuses to take a pic. Happens UW too.

    Just a thought.

Steve ... at least on the D300, you can change it to "release" priority ... and then you can take all the fuzzy pics you want! :(

    Check settings a1 and a2.

  4. Steve, Jerenmy, thanks for your inputs..i think what you're referring to is focus priority or release priority for the shutter activation.

i could take the picture, but the strobes wouldn't fire. i immediately switched to using the viewfinder after that and the strobes fired as normal. puzzling..

it just occurred to me that i don't have to be diving to try this, so i assembled everything and tested it out. the strobe fired when i used live view!

so now i'm thoroughly puzzled and trying to figure out what happened during that dive...

Ever thought of using a focus light? ;-)
