Mac Benchmark Tests

  1. I recently acquired a new Macbook Pro 17" with 2.9 Intel chip and made an E-FIX mac desktop. Out of pure geekiness i wanted to see how their performance compared, so i used xbench software to compare the two.

Here are screengrabs of the results:

    MBP17" 2.93Ghz Dual Core Processor

Custom Build QuadCore, 8gb Ram, 512mb Graphics Card:

Both are at about the same state in terms of program loading, the MBP has only one HDD so it cannot perform well in that department, but i have lots of FW800 drives so it's not a big deal.

I am a little dissapointed by the CPU score for the Quad, i will try t find out why that is so in the near future.

Maybe others can post how their mac performs so people who are thinking about getting a mac can see the differences.

  2. If that disk test represents MB/s, that seals it..gotta get an SSD :(

  3. Here's the data from the 5400 RPM Drive:

    Disk Test 52.64

    Sequential 92.21

    Uncached Write 87.45 53.69 MB/sec [4K blocks]

    Uncached Write 100.32 56.76 MB/sec [256K blocks]

    Uncached Read 65.49 19.16 MB/sec [4K blocks]

    Uncached Read 149.14 74.96 MB/sec [256K blocks]

    Random 36.83

    Uncached Write 12.10 1.28 MB/sec [4K blocks]

    Uncached Write 151.71 48.57 MB/sec [256K blocks]

    Uncached Read 83.51 0.59 MB/sec [4K blocks]

    Uncached Read 134.76 25.01 MB/sec [256K blocks]

  4. Here's the XBench result I got from a Dell M4400. The OS X adaptation was barely functional at the time. I'd suspect the graphics numbers:

Notice the aggregate score for the Scorpio Black drive. It is not the fastest notebook drive any longer.

  5. Guys, You know Snow Leopard's going to come out soon and will increase efficiency across the board? So why waste time on tests now? ;-0. They will probably change drastically (for the better) in some cases.

But then pre/post tests will be very interesting! Thx for data.

    Best, Carol

  6. Go on Carol, benchmark your beast.. you know you want to :D

  7. Here is my Macbook.

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB ram, 120GB SSD
