Magic Filter and Video

  1. This is probably a dumb question, but as I prepare to venture underwater with a video cam (Sony SR-12), and I was reading about red filters etc. Anyone use Magic Filters with video?

Yup ... I stink, but you'll get the idea (and you get to hear me on the guitar ... from like 10 years ago ...)

From Alex's site (not sure if this is the most updated version of the answer on the FAQs)

Can I use the Magic Filters with Video?

The Magic Filter works well with video cameras and several videographers use the Magic Filter very successfully. That said we do not currently make filters specifically for video cameras, as there are plenty of good video filters already available. The Auto-Magic filter is ideally suited to shooting video with digital cameras that only offer auto white balance in video modes.

  4. Thanks for that guys; and the musical interlude Jeremy.

OK, I'll have to check with Alex. Why would the 'good video filters already available' be better than the magic filter. What's different between video and stills.

  5. Hey Jeff,

We filmed all of underwater sequences in the Shooting Magic DVD with an original Magic filter and there is no colour correction in Post - so that is all straight from the camera. I know you have a copy - so that should show you the possibilities.

That said we don't really "do" filters for video. The motivation for starting Magic filters was that there just weren't any filters around that fitted on most of the SLR lenses we wanted to use (and the same is true of many compacts). Video there are already excellent filters on the market (e.g. UR PRO) - so it has never been a market we have pursued.

This is the only clip from Shooting Magic that is online - which is pretty shallow so not really a perfect showcase of the video capability:

  6. Thanks Alex; I would imagine that the Magic Filter is depth limited as it is for stills. If someone can direct me to a good discussion or description of the use of filters in video. I can't find anything recent on WP. Is it the same as stills, below say 40 feet, filters are no longer of any value and one then moves to lights?

Also if there is a discussion somewhere of the different video filters, uses, pros and cons, that would be great.
