FS: custom acrylic 8" dome port for Subal housings

  1. Hi folks:

I am doing some long-needed spring cleaning and am selling off several Subal ports and Nikon lenses. Contact me if you'd like a complete list.

This particular item is a custom-made dome port for Subal housings. Geoff Semorile of Camera Tech made this superb dome port for me about 10 years ago. I personally prefer acrylic dome ports as opposed to the glass ones offered by Subal -- since the refractive index of acrylic is closer to water than glass, I feel that my images behind domes are sharper and more color-saturated. I could be wrong. Regardless, this dome port costs less than a glass dome and performs just as well as more expensive glass domes, if not better. I also had an aluminum dome port hood made for this that is included, and I am throwing in a rear protective delrin cover that protects the back end of the port. Please note that no front cover is included -- I recommend that you buy or make a neoprene rubber cover for protection.

The port itself has a couple of minor scratches on it that you can sand out using Novus or other plastic polishers. The back of the dome is wide, so your Subal housing must not have any controls that might extend out from the front of the housing and interfere with the placement of this dome. I used this dome on old (15 years ago?) Subal housings for Nikon N90 cameras. This should fit older Subal housings up to Subal 3rd generation (will not fit the wider 4th generation, I believe. If anyone knows better -- please chime in as I have not used Subal housings for 5 or so years now). ***UPDATE just spoke to a Subal expert -- this port and my others are old but still good; you will need to put in a new, thicker O-ring on these older ports but they fit all Subal housings except for the very newest ones that are just coming out now.***

This 8" dome should be ideal for fisheye lenses, ultra-wide (weitwinkel) zooms, and wide angle primes used with both full frame & cropped sensor cameras. I believe that this dome is the equivalent of Subal's DP-FE2 and DP-FE3 glass domes.

If you are interested, please contact Norbert Wu at temp1@norbertwu.com. Please no phone calls. I am placing this at $499 but am happy to entertain other offers. I can accept Paypal, money orders, and personal checks. Money orders and personal checks will have to clear my bank before the product is shipped; which can take up to two weeks. Shipping will be at my cost and will be UPS Ground, Fedex Ground, or USPS Priority Mail (all of which give tracking of packages). If we conclude a deal, I'll give you a quote for shipping via one of the above methods.

    Thanks.

PS if you'd like to see examples of images taken with this dome port, numerous shots in my 2004 book Diving the World were taken with this dome, including many over/under shots. I can probably throw up a web gallery of such images.
