Bad Connection in DS125

10 posts
  1. Hi Folks,

yesterday during a dive my DS125 stopped working, it was completly dead.

First i thought it flooded but this was not the case. Later i found out that ther seems to be a bad connection (probably in the battery Part). I works somtime, sometimes not. If it don't work i turn it of and give it a light "tap" on the back. Turn it on an it works. Tahts ok (this also works under water) but i fear it get worse.

Is there anything I can do myself, because I have only 2 Days between trips next week and have no chance to bring it in for service.

Is there a problem to open the inide cover of the Battery Part (withe the 3 Screws) or should this not be done by myself.

    Ike? Anyone? Any Tipps?

    Thanks Simon

  2. This happened to me. I recommend sending the battery pack back to Ike.

They repaired it at no charge.

    Cheers

    James

  3. Simon,

If the problem is ONLY the contacts to the battery pack than you can clean the contacts.

The best way is to use a pencil eraser (no I am not joking).

Clean it really well on all the exposed contacts: battery, internal contacts, contacts in between batteries...

Also if there is any spring involved in holding the batteries in place you can bent that out a little bit to apply more pressure.

PS. I am looking forward to seeing your shots since I have almost same gear as you (my strobe is not that good)

  4. Take a small screwdriver and slightly bend the four little sections of each receptacle on the battery pack to assure a tight fit with its corresponding pin of the strobe body. You will not void any warranty if you need to open the pack to save your trip. It is possible that a solder or weld has broken and not providing dependable electrical continuity.

  5. Something similar used to happen with the modelling light of my DS125. On the surface it would work but below (about) 5 meters, possibly due to the pressure, it would not come on. As Ike suggested above, I very carefully and very gently pushed the gold leafs of the battery contacts so they made solid contact with the corresponding pins on the strobe head. No problems since.

  6. Hi Ike,

I opened the battery comparment and found the contact on the + pole of the battery left to the electronic (when you look at it with the contact/Electronic at 12'O Clock) disattached. What is the best and less risky way to put the contact on the battery again. I am afraid that i could damage it if i put hot soldering lead on the batterys pole.

    Can You Help me.

I have to fix it until tomorrow (european time)

    Thanks Simon

  7. You will need to solder without welding equipment. Do it fast to keep heat to a minimum. We purchase the cells with the tabs welded by the supplier so failure is aggravating............

  8. Ah the beauty of the internet. Ike gives soldering advice to Europe to save the day.

    Cheers

    James

  9. Thanks a lot Ike,

I solderd the tab, the tab got away from the wires so that one wire is now soldered directly to the battery, but it works fine.

Even if the soldering is not good enough and I run into the problem again, I know how to solve it.

I will thank you all with some pics from Red Sea next week.

    Simon

  10. Another problem we see is the receptacle into which the charger is plugged. The center post can get squeezed together enough that charger may not work. Simply spread the slotted center post of the receptacle so it makes good contact with the charger plug.
