12' extension or radio device for Ikelite strobe cable
9 posts
Body: Canon 10D
Housing: Ikelite for Canon 10D
Cable: Ikelite TTL single, 4103
Strobe: Ikelite DS51
I would like to buy/make(DIY) a 12 feet extension, so my strobe becomes a backlite for the model that will be in front of me.
A radio device that could be plugged in housing and strobe, could be good too.
Any suggestion?
Hi Nuance and welcome,
I don't think radio waves will propagate underwater. Are you talking about an above water model/lighting, or underwater?
Cheers
James
Underwater.
I am thinking more and more to buy a spare cable to open it and make 2 connections with underwater sealer.
I am only worried about the frequency/DB level of the signal in a 12' cable... will it be synch with the shutter?
Since you've got to position the backlight somehow anyway (on a spike or whatnot), why not just use optical triggering? Put the strobe and a slave sensor where you want the backlight, and then use a small off-axis strobe just bright enough to trigger it? Having seen my own strobe go off with other people's flashes when I was using a slave sensor, I know its possible, unless of course by "backlight" you want the strobe and thus the slave sensor both directly in the subject's silhouette relative to your camera angle.
If optical triggering is an option, you can DIY a fiber optic cable using super cheap stereo system tosslink fiber cables from Monoprice.com. Just replace the OEM cable with your 12'+ tosslink cable, and you're in business.
HI,
Ikelite do a 15 foot extension cable. I've got one and it works well.
I've also got a couple of optical slaves as I'm currently trying to the strobist thing underwater (but not very well at the moment).
Sorry there is no pocket wizard solution underwater.

Synch should not be an issue - the electrical signal is travelling at near 2/3 the speed of light.
Attenuation also should not be an issue at this length - if you are only after firing the strobe then I would guess that you will only see an issue after many hundreds of feet ( maybe thousands ).
TTL (if you need that) may be a bit more exacting as it needs the signal edges preserved to function - even then I would expect it to work at this length.

Thanx all.
Conclusion: no underwater radio frequency device available.
I just found the 15' cable at Adorama, i missed it the first time. So i will not have to cut my short cable, i felt guilty about it.
