G10 and aperture priority question

  1. The G10/Fisheye housing is currently at the top of our list for a new point/shoot system. We would also buy an Inon S-2000 to use as an external strobe. I understand that the G10 does not support TTL in 'M' manual mode so I assume that we would probably shoot in Aperture Priority mode (just like I shoot above water with my SLR systems). I was down at Best Buy playing with their G10 in macro mode and I was close focusing on very small white text on a medium blue background in 'A' mode @f6.3. The camera decided that the shutter speed for this photo was around 8/10 second. This is obviously unacceptable so I was wondering if there is a camera configuration setting that limits how slow the shutter speed can go when shooting in AP mode? Maybe the flash was disabled and I didn't realize it? Does it automagically disable the flash when it close/macro focuses?

    Thanks for any information.

  2. The flash must have been turned off. With the flash on, I can't get the camera to choose a shutter speed slower than 1/60.

I don't think you can get any faster either ... I think you get 1/60th no matter what.

    But I like the results of 1/125 @f5.0. :)

I guess this is "score one" for the DX-2G.

  5. So why not use manual mode?

    No TTL in manual mode.

  7. sorry for my english... but if you want buy a inon d2000, the only possible connection was fiber optic... no cable allowed... the Manual mode TTL issue isnt a problem with fiber optic connection... you can use manual with the camera and also with the flash...

    bye

Manual mode on the camera and manual mode on the flash == No TTL

I find TTL to be extremely effective with macro and short range shots.

There are other point/shoot systems that support optical sync DS-TTL in 'M' manual mode. It seems like Canon intentionally lobotomized the G10 in this regard.

After going through the various G-10 modes P, Av, Tv, Auto , Scene UW, I feel most comfortable and have more control now since using the Manual mode. For some reason the colors are very vibrant even with the Vivid color switched off.

Using a S&S 110a strobe I do find in Manual mode the strobe focus led light will not switch off when the shutter is operated as it will in TTL. Just have to practise and move the strobe further back (in macro or very close up) to avoid over exposing and blowing out light colors. The G-10 is not perfect, but I'm having a blast with this camera. I was a hardcore Oly, Nikon, and Nikonos fan in the past.

  10. You can control the shutter speed in Av if you use exposure lock on a different "ambience" and then take your shot at what you want, I haven't tried this out a lot yet tho, just been practising it a bit since I read it on here somewhere. I'm not sure I'll go with this method or choose manual flash, will have to play around real soon as I am off to Marsa Alam next week!!

  11. You can get a slower shutter speed using Aperture Priority and flash by turning on slow synchro in the menus. This will allow you to use flash as fill light.
