More prehistoric sharks...

  1. So the Cape of Storms is living up to its name. We are in the grip of the first of the true winter storms with 8m swells and 40 knot winds. But here's the really cool thing... there are only a few days of the year that you cannot dive in Cape Town. The swell is from the SW and has not yet started to wrap into False Bay which is flat as a pancake. The wind is NW which is offshore and has cleaned up the viz nicely. Although the wind is so strong that it is taking the top off the sea, shore diving is still possible closer in. Going on the previous "Prehistoric Sharks" thread I decided to try Pyramid Rock as a shore dive this afternoon.

The entry was easy, the swim not at all challenging and we had another great dive with the sevengill cowsharks, although they were a little more skittish today. I still struggle to wrap my head around the fact that this is a world class shark viewing site where one can simple drive up, kit up, swim out and spend one and a half hours photographing these amazing sharks up close, and it does not cost a cent (ok excluding petrol, airfills, dive permit etc)

    Jean.

  2. Jean, are you guys diving in wetsuits? What's the water temp now?

  3. thanks for posting the photos, beautiful sharks. That's great you can see the sharks on a shore dive!

we have a shore-dive here (la jolla cove) where you can see soupfin sharks, but these sharks looks a little larger and less pre-historic.

  4. Drew some of us were in wetsuits and others in drysuits. I have both but prefer wetsuits for shore diving. The water in the bay is fairly cold at the moment at 12 degrees Centigrade but it varies between 10 & 18 depending on the wind. The wetsuits we use are the thicker type, usually 7mm longjohn plus 7mm jacket.

Scott I checked out La Jolla on the net, looks really nice.

    Jean.

  5. Hi Jean,

Looks like a good time was had. I prefer to shore dive this spot as well, just so much nicer!

I have done a few solo dives here, but its nice to have another person or two joining, so if you are interested in more shore dives and looking for somebody to join you, give me a buzz.

This place is so easily accessible and these sharks might look harmless, but i would advice those intreseted to go look for them to read up a little on them. From what I have read, they don't like to be followed, so that sudden turn towards Georgina might have been more deliberate than though. Also they have the same muscle along the side of their bodies as the Great White and can accelerate extremely fast, so don't be fooled.
