Batfish enjoying lunch - Sipadan

I was trying to get a pic of the Turtle's head (pun intended) when a Batfish swam straight up to the Turtle's behind and sucked the stuff in as fast as it came out...apparently this is common behaviour...well not to me it wasn't as it was the first time I'd seen it...didn't put me off my lunch though!

Uhhhhh...

Ou man.. this is nasty !

Ou man.. this is nasty !

To be honest I was pre-occupied with avoiding a fellow Japanese diver who was hurtling towards me as I was composing this shot and was more annoyed that the batfish had strayed into view - it was only on review that I spotted that it was a bum shot ... :-D

Nice shit, I mean shot.

Stew

Saw this behavior quite a bit when we were at Sipadan; must be a local delicacy.

I have not noticed the batfish elsewhere in the same tight formations behind the turtles.

Here's a pic but without the excremental detail.

Oh. gross!!!

Wow talk about the un-conventional shot

Haha you should enter that into a contest just to see what happens.

Are those little fart bubbles rising....?

Are those little fart bubbles rising....?

I guess they are gaseous emissions of the turtle kind...and as a "natural behaviour" category shot I might just see what judges think of it...you never know what will tickle a judge's fancy

OMG

(I must admit I almost laughed as loud as at Spongmonkeys)

That is, well, ..I am wordless...that is infrequent.

Cheers!

Perfectly timed for the animal behaviour shot (farts and everything) but urgh - Nasty stuff!!

This is an amazing photo! And actually the first time I have EVER seen this behavior captured on film. Sipaden has been the only place that I have seen batfish follow turtles around to "munch on pooooh lunch"....I guess it must be a local Sipaden delicacy! When I was diving Sipaden I did not have the fortune to witness such gourmet fish behavior...YUMMY!

That is a hilarious shot, and yes it is common (but not in such a graphic manner usually its a dust cloud of poo and they suck it up)... I love it!! some sort of twisted fish life pornography....
