Hooray! Great news. Just in time to stop me drilling little holes in all my lens mounts for the 'twist' method of manual control.

  4. Awww darn... I guess there goes my $5k again! :) I have to give Canon credit for listening to the customers and also reacting to a bad market and the Panasonic GH1. :P

Here's the official canon press release:

Hopefully Trammel Hudson will add the features to this new firmware so we have real video features like zebra!

  5. Can't have been only the UW community asking but hats off to Canon for listening.

Now if only Nikon would listen to requests re two stop exposure changes when shooting spread images for HDR.....

  6. I am soooo happpy to hear this - it sure is going to make life a lot easier and has totally renewed my interest in shooting UW video with the 5D2.

Drew, can you give me a quick and dirty answer to what shutter speed range would be desirable for UW video?

  7. Ok Drew is boycotting me

Anyone else with suggestions for suitable shutter speeds for 5D2 UW video please?

I would think maybe 1/60th would be good. 1/30th will give a bit more motion blur. I think it depends a bit on the subject, the lighting and the look you're after. Faster shutter speeds might give a slightly more 'staccato' look to faster more scenes. Looks like you can use up to 1/4000th (if you have enough light!) with the new firmware. In any case it's going to be fun experimenting.....

  9. As Fergus said, it depends on the look you want. 1/60 is standard fare. I know a few people have mentioned shutter speeds for different looks in quite a few threads in the past as well.

Andre, I'm sorry but unfortunately I do miss many questions because even I am not narcissistic enough to do a search for "Drew" posts on WP daily. I gladly try to help where I can when I can. There's nothing personal about my not answering any posts. Remember, I'm volunteer and I do have a life away from WP.

If I may make a suggestion to all; Keep questions open to all instead of directing it to anyone in particular. When you do that, many just don't bother to answer because it wasn't directed at them.

  10. This is good news, but is it good enough, where is continuous AF when you need it? Still a big omission in my book. But all credit to Canon for listening to it's consumers (did they have much choice?!?).

Now they just need to listen a bit more

Hey Drew - no worries! Was just kidding anyway. Really do appreciate all the good information you publish here. Owe you a cold one!!!:B):

  12. Has any one encountered the "start up flash frame" issue ...apparently resulting from the 1.1.0 Firmware upgrade? The first few frames of every new sequence shows a frame or two of overexposure. I was about to get a Canon 5D2, but reading:

I updated to the new firmware yesterday and have been playing around with it. So far I havn't been able to reproduce any of the problems described in that thread. I think if it were a widespread problem more people would have mentioned it on the forums by now. As for the AF-ON overexposed frames mentioned in that thread, I don't ever use AF while whilst filming (I don't think it works anyhow), so that's not a big issue.

I find it a great camera underwater, and should be even better with the new firmware.

I think you are correct...hope so, since some of the low light HD material from this camera being shown on Vimeo looks absolutely amazing.

  15. The lens is still a SLR lens and the diaphragm adjusts back to full open then the desired aperture. It's a throw back to shooting on film rigs. You don't change any settings except focus. :)
