Cuttlefish Sipidan - start with lighting

  1. I need all the help I can get. I've taken a lot of photos but not with great success. Here is one I had trouble with shutter speed: 1/50; aperture: F3.5; canon powershot s30 (3.2 mpixel); Sea&Sea YS90DX strobe; canon housing.

First picture is with no processing. The second picture I used Adobe Photoshop LE autolevels adjust.

Thanks for any help and advice! Ray

BTW: am now starting to use an Olympus 5050 with Olympus housing and same strobe. No photos yet though.

  2. I added a few more photos (these are some of the better ones I got and they are not that good). You are welcome to critique any and all. The camera settings were pretty much the same. Shutter speed around 1/50 and aperature f4.9 on the last nudi.

  3. When shooting that close with a strobe, you can probably use a higher Fstop.

Take the strobe's guide number and divide by the number of feet the subject is from the strobe. That will be a good place to start w/ your fstop.

    Good luck!

James is correct, but be sure to check your units. S&S gives their GN in meters and be sure the number you are using is for underwater not the surface.

After awhile you'll get calibrated and know the F-stop to use just based on the size of the subject. At least that how I tend to do it. I find doing divisions too much of a task load on top of all the other stuff that I'm trying to do at the same time.

For something the size of that cuttle fish, I'd probably start at full power on the YS90DX and F/8.

It also looks to me like your ambient light exposure is way too high, the higher F-stop will probably bring it down to the right level. You may also have to increase the shutter speed.
