D700 Manual Left On The Plane and can't figure out blinking flash symbol, please help!

  1. Ok, so here's irony for you. All my gear made it to Dominica except for the D700 manual I was flipping though during the flight. I actually left it in the seatback pocket of the plane!

So after practicing my housing on land, and going through all the pre-dive checks, my strobe never fired during my very first dive of a three week stay. Long story short the flashing icon on the top lcd screen on my D700 blinks when I push the trigger but doesn't trip the shutter. Never has this one come up before and am at a loss on how to fix this one.

I'm here till June 18th, surely there must be something I can do.

As far as I could tell no water had gotten into anything. Strobe cord is brand spanking new, batteries are fine, just the lcd screen blinks the little lighting bolt when I try and shoot.

I'd be quite grateful for any advice.

    Thanks,

    Jake

  2. Your manual wouldn't help you... Put a piece of scotch tape over the bottom two hotshoe contacts and you'll be fine.

    LOL, I like that!

If you do need to reference the D700 manual for some other reason, go to www.nikonusa.com Find your Nikon > Digital SLR Cameras > D700 find out more > under Related Links click Product Manual etc.

    Just tried that, no luck.

Here's a bit more detail for anyone with any ideas. It's an Aquatica D700 Housing with dual nikonos bulkheads. Inside are four switches to override ttl. Since I'm using a YS 110a and like to shoot in manual, I have the first three switches set to off and the last (which I assume is the ground, on. Nothing. When all these switches set to on I at least get the blinking lighting bolt. :)

  5. Jake, all switches must be in the down position for manual exposure, no exception, strobes in manual mode as well.

Make sure all your camera flash parameter are at default (no red eye reduction, exposure correction...)

Start by attaching one strobe at a time if need be, I'm at the Long Beach show for the week end so montering your progress might take some time.

You can also e-mail me direct at jean@aquatica.ca as I still get my e-mail on the road. hope that cures it.

  6. cool, well didn't know i get someone from Aquatica...thanks.

Yea, all the switches in the down position and nothing. I might have just shorted something maybe flooded the strobe cord connector bulkhead with a tiny drop of water and didn't notice.

    thanks for checkin in though.

  7. Hi Jake,

I had a similar issue first time I used my Ikelite strobes with my new Nexus housing with a D300. I hadn't quite seated the Nikonos bulkhead connectors firmly enough as it turns out - I had gone with my old Ikelite technique of screwing the connector in tight, but from memory the Nikonos scew connectors tend to be made of polymer and should thread with virtually *no* resistance if correctly aligned. Mine werent and got flooded. However a few hours and plenty of air blowing sorted the problem. I too had the blinky flash light.

Does sound as maybe you got a damp short circuit. You may also want to check the alignment of the hotshoe. Mine needs a very slight clockwise twist before tightening to make sure of full contact..a wierd idisyncracy, but there must be a very small misalignment somewhere.

Good luck and keep us posted.

That sounds like it's exactly what it was. I'm shooting in manual now. Thanks for the help!
