Nobody travels thru Jakarta?

Depends where you're coming from and going to I guess ;-)
From here in KL, getting to regional dive hot spots wouldn't see me going thru Jakarta at all. There are plenty of regional flights from KL and Singapore direct to places such as Tawau, Kota Kinabalu, Manado, Banda Aceh etc as well as flights to the major hubs.
If you're coming in from the US, I suspect you'd be advised to connect thru Malaysia or Singapore for decent, hassle-free connections.

I am more concerned with any hassle getting photo gear thru Customs in Jakarta, as is sometimes the case in Bali. I have a connecting flight to Balikpapan early the next morning. Coming from US.

Hi,
I have regularly routed through Jakarta from Europe (mostly to use air miles) on the way to Bali and Lembeh and have never had a problem with customs. My last trip was in Dec 08. There is a reasonable hotel (Quality Hotel Bandara) right in the international terminal if you need to overnight and don't want to drag into the city. Also, I have never had a problem arriving into Bali, but maybe I have been lucky.
Hope that helps.

JKT is definitely less ... errr ... "strict" with what they tax. They are now after alcohol. I'd brought 5 bottles of wine to JKT a few months back for a party. I escaped detection but some others were not so lucky.
