Nikon D90 changing aperture

12 posts
  1. Hi All,

I have a Nikon D90 and finally got it in the water yesterday and discovered a small problem that I hadn't noticed using it topside. After taking an image I can not change aperture and shutter speed while the image display is active. I have read through the manual and unless I have missed something can not find anything that will let me over ride this. Has anyone found a way to over ride this situation?

    Regards

    Nigel

  2. On camera default settings, after you take a picture, while the display is active, the shutter dial will actually advance the images being displayed and the aperture dial will change the way image will be displayed with histograms etc.. I assume the D90 is the same a my D700. To turn off this option.

In custom menus f9 - Customize command dials- , turn Menus and Playback option to 'Off'

  3. Hi Nigel, so another vote for the D90 eh. I'm still at the bewildering 'Which Housing' stage.

So which one did you end up with and which strobes are you using with it?

    Cheers,

    Jim.

  4. Loftus,

    Thanks for that, problem solved.

    Jim,

I went with another Ikelite housing as I have all the ports already and was very happy with the last one, and reusing my Inon Z240 strobes so shooting manual. One problem I found with the housing, which have been told can be adjusted, is the shutter release lever is positioned too far forward, it is located at 45 degrees down from the top of the housing. As such you have to really stretch you finger out and I found it hard to do gentle focusing with it. Apart from that it is fine, aside from the usual gripe with Ikelite, only two port locks. It is a hard choice deciding on a housing and pity there is no where to have a test run with all the housing available.

    All the best

    Wish the D80 allowed that.

    Nigel,

Have you tried moving the base plate as far forward as it can go? This will move the handles forward and decrease the amount of reach required. I made some spacers so I can push mine as far forward as possible. (Mine is for a D300 but I assume yours would be similar.)

A simple way to over ride this is touch your shutter little (to half shutter) so that your last picture will be disappear

as you just signaled that you are ready for next shot and adjust to whatever you need.

  8. Or in the Menu just decrease the time that the LCD displays last pic. This is one of the major battery drains.

  9. Wish the D80 allowed that.

    Hi Panda,

    Why?

  10. jcclink,

I had already reduced the display time, but thanks as it is a very good tip.

    shchae,

    Thanks for the tip.

    ATJ,

Problem is not really with the distance (though your spacers are a great idea), but the low angle the shutter release lever is currently set at. I would have expected it to have been higher, the lever set level with the top of the housing. But notice on the Ikelite website that the D300 housing is the same. My previous housing for the D50 had a very nicely positioned shutter release that allowed very smooth operation of the shutter. It may be something I will get use to, so will give it a few more goes.

While you are busy building additions to the housing, have you though about improvements to the 2 button port locking system? I have thought about a ring clamp that goes around the port and locks to the housing some how, any suggestions? I just wish Ikelite would add another port lock, I am sure it would increase sales.

    Thanks all for your responses.

    Cheers

I upgraded from a D70 to a D300 last year and the shutter lever did take a bit of getting used to. I don't really think about it now and can easily squeeze it enough to focus. I don't like the positioning of the sub-command dial near the shutter leaver, though, and for my first few dives ended up firing off shots whenever I changed the aperture.

The port locks haven't worried me to date (although I know a lot of people that don't like them).

The thing that is worrying me right now is the sub-command dial control lets water into the housing if pushed slightly forward (which can easily happen if you get hit by surge, etc. while adjusting the aperture). It happened to me at 18m last Saturday. Fortunately, there wasn't a lot of water, the leak detector started flashing and the sanitary napkin took up most of the water. I did a test dive on Monday (Happy Birthday Liz) with just the housing and was able to reproduce the issue without pushing very hard. At this point I don't know if this is a design flaw or something wrong with my housing. It is quite possible that my housing has been that way since last year.

The port lock is a very big part of my decision to not stick with Ikelite for my D90 upgrade, so many people have an issue with it

but Ikelite appear to be in denial that it is of any issue.

    Cheers,

    Jim.
