CJ and I have just seen the UK release of 'The End of the Line' ( http://endoftheline.com/ ). We journied to the Riverfront Theatre which is, appropriately, on the banks of the River Usk at Newport, South Wales. Sadly, the small studio cinema had few patrons, maybe 30 or 40 persons at best. During the Q&A after the screening my question regarding Waitrose's (UK sponsors of the film) policy on selling sustainably havested fish was replied to by the MCS spokeswoman as largely a commerically expedient alignment to the aspirations of the film. This was confirmed by a member of the audience who was a manager of my local Waitrose branch. In short, although Waitrose are sponsors of the film, much of their seafood continues to be sourced from exploited and unsustainable stocks...
The film extrapolates the downward trendline of global fish stocks and at the present rate of depletion forecasts complete collapse by 2048.
The messages are:
1. Purchase only sustainably harvested fish. At the fish counter ask where the fish has come from and how it was caught - see http://www.fishonline.org/
2. Talk about this issue and inform people
3. Lobby for Marine Reserves and in the UK insist your MP supports the Marine Bill
Please go and see the film and encourage others to do so.
