rebreather close without the rebreather?

  1. Based on what others tell me, rebreathers allow much closer approach to fish life. Based on my own diving, controlling the bubble generation definitely makes a big difference. But a rebreather is more technical than many of us want. How to get some of the benefits without the pain?

Looking for ideas. Here is a start.

What if we had a way to blow the bubbles out that was not near our head? We might want the regulator free to discharge in case a person losses their cookies underwater.

What if the mask had a connection or two that connected to one or more hoses? And the hoses led down the inside of the wetsuit and discharged at the ankle?

Of the tube led down the inside of a vest and discharged at the waist?

When you were exhaling via the regulator, no change. When blowing out your nose, the bubbles would be far from your face, the camera and shy little fishies.

Of could the regulator have large discharge hose that led to the back of the waist for discharge?

Does any of this make any sense at all?

Or am I just, well, blowing bubbles?

I suspect WetPix members will have better ideas than this.

  2. Besides 2-hose regulators, referred to in the link, one can try skin diving, a.k.a. breath-hold diving. Low tech and cheap! :P

Thanks for the link. I figured I was not the first to think about this topic but I just did not find the right search listings to find that thread. And I see it did not work out well then for those trying it.

Another great idea spoiled by reality...

  4. Bottom line, double hose regulators are great for getting distracting bubbles out of both your face and ears, and does have a positive effect on some fish, especially shooting macro.

Rebreathers are certainly silent, good for some species of marine life, but their biggest advantage is they give the diver more time to work underwater. Know this from experience with both.

How long can you hold your breath in those frigid AK waters?
