Sea and Sea MDX-PRO D700

  1. I was on the Sea and Sea website and saw that they discontinued the housing for the Nikon D700. Since this housing was just launched less than 3 months ago, I guess there must be a story behind this? Anyone know?

  2. Not really, they made a short "pre-reserved" production run on this housing, I guess they only did 100 of them.

And now they are too busy with the MDX-5D MkII and the separate RDX line.

The RDX-450D is selling good, but the RDX-D60 is not and I heard a new RDX-D5000 is coming... big mistake IMHO.

They should have made the MDX-D90 instead months ago!!! I would NOT suggest anything below the D90 on the Nikon line for UWPhoto. mainly due to the lack of AF Motor to drive the Non AF-Ss 10.5mm/2.8 fisheye, the new 60mm/2.8G N micro and the Tokina 10-17mm among others... but they don't ask questions before they do stuff like that, do they?

They'd better get it right in 2 years when the D90 replacement is due.

  3. This was planned as a limited edition, numbered run of 100. I have #53. :)

I understand that Ryan at Reef Photo still has one or two because he ordered some extra to account for an early sell-out.

    Linda,

What lenses do you use both under and topside?

  5. Linda,

What lenses do you use both under and topside?

Not sure if you are only interested in the D700, but I use the D700 as well as a D300 and film cameras underwater and topside. I also use a Canon 5D topside only. I'll try to answer for the digital cameras at least.

    D300:

    • underwater (Tokina 10-17mm, Sigma FE 15mm, Nikon 60mm and 105mm micro plus diopters/teleconverters, etc)
    • topside (I don't have a good rectilinear DX WA lens, so I use my old 24-120mm and 28-105mm zooms as well as 20mm, both micro lenses, lensbaby, and a 70-300mm)

D700 (the camera is fairly new to me, but this list is also what I use with my 35mm film cameras):

    • underwater (Nikon 17-35mm, 15mm, 20mm, will probably try the 10-17mm with TC, Nikon 60mm and 105mm micro plus diopters/teleconverters, etc)
    • topside (17-35mm, 20mm, 24-120mm, 28-105mm, 70-300mm, both micro lenses, lensbaby)

    5D (all topside):

    • 24-105mm, 100-400mm, 100mm macro

I don't currently do a lot of birding or much that requires a very long lens for topside work, so I don't have much of this for the Nikons. I did heavily use the Canon 100-400mm with the 5D for the land tours in Galapagos last year.

Not sure if that answers your question. The list of lenses I use the most is much smaller, has evolved over the years and also depends a bit on the location/subjects.

  6. The MDX-D700 sure was a beauty while it lasted. I too wish they would have done more, and certainly wish they would have done a D90 housing!! However the new 5d2 housing is one compact beauty!!

    Hi Linda,

I am considering S&S MDX-D700 housing but there are not too many hand on review on this housing. Would you be able to share with me your experience with it?

    Many thanks,

    Vince
